Hi

Can anyone tell me how often the fasting Hb1ac test should be done?
I'm pretty sure when I was first diagnosed, my DSN said it should be every three months but my GP nurse has said today it should only be once a year and the non fasting is every three months?? I've had the fasting tests every three months since diagnosed in January 09.

Please help, as I am thoroughly confused now :?

PS Im a Type2.

Pillowbelly - I too was told pretty much the same. For the first year or so after diagnosis, I would be tested every 3 - 4 months to see what was happening. I was tested in october when first diagnosed and was 7.9, then again in February where it was 7.3 and then nothing until quite recently when I was forced to change to a new doctor - last one was 10.2

My practise nurse has said I will be tested every 3 months for 2 0r 3 times then we will review from there. Whenever i've had Hba1C i've fasted anyway. not sure whether I should have or not, just something i've done and was not told any different (apart from 1st one in hospital)

Hi Pb.
Here is the May 2009 NICE guidance re HbA1c testing for a Type 2.

1.3.2
Measure the individual’s HbA1c levels at:
• 2–6-monthly intervals (tailored to individual needs) until the blood glucose level is stable on unchanging therapy; use a measurement made at an interval of less than 3 months as a indicator of direction of change, rather than as a new steady state

• 6-monthly intervals once the blood glucose level and blood glucose-lowering therapy are stable.

Perhaps you might quote that to the Nurse ??
