Hi
My 6 year old son who has type 1 diabetes had his HP1AC results yesterday
The diabetic nurse said that the results were really good and We were heading in the right direction how ever I am unsure

His results were 66mmol which is 7.8% - are they good or should we as parents be doing more to bring it down even more

Also with regards to my son having a small chocolate or cake with his meal most times is this not good for him in the future ? his sugar levels are usually between 4 - 8

I feel that with him having insulin it should be fine but the nurse disagrees
I tried explaining to the diabetic nurse that at School he gets a desert with his lunch everyday therefor he gets upset when he does not get a treat and i feel bad as a parent when i refused him a treat

Any help will be appreciated

The recommendation for children seems to be >7.5%:

As for the chocolate cake, you don't want to be denying him a sweet treat but at the same time he doesn't want to be having one after every meal, cakes and sweets - as for any child should be limited so as to not get them into unhealthy eating habits, when my own children were little (they are not diabetic) my wife and I would keep treats for a weekend or on special occasions.

A yogurt might be better, ( Tesco do small kids yogurts, 5.2 carbs per small pot.) A 6 pack yogurt, 3 raspberry and beetroot and 3 mango and carrot, really tastes nice too. or carrot, cucumber or pepper sticks with some dip, raspberries or strawberries, or an individual jelly, raisins or sultanas, that sort of thing may be better ?

Best wishes RRB
