HBa1c - 4 months after diagnosis

I was diagnosed with T2 at the end of April this year. My first Hba1c blood test showed:
BS 10.8%
Total Cholesterol 6

I was put on 40mg Gliclazide twice a day. I also started regular exercise and a low carb diet. Eliminated potatoes, rice, pasta plus sweet things, chocolate, cakes etc. I've lost around 12lb since April.

My latest results are:
BS 5.4%
Total Cholesterol 3.1 (2.9 two days later in BUPA Health Assessment)
LDL 1.6 (1.8 two days later in BUPA test)
HDL 1.1 (0.8 two days later in BUPA test)

A bit surprised with the difference of the cholesterol tests taken 2 days apart.

My doctor is very pleased. I feel good but have constant headaches which I told him about. His concern seems to be that I have too good control and my BS is a bit too low, apparently this may be causing the headaches. He's suggested that I stop the Gliclazide and move to Metformin, not sure of the dose yet. I've said I'd think about it and go and see him next week.
Has anyone swapped from Gliclazide to Metformin? Any problems?
I'm also wondering wether I need any medication, I wonder if I could control things with diet and exercise alone.

Well done, great results. I take both drugs although for a couple of years it was metformin only. Glic ws added when things got worse and now I have Byetta to boot. The gliclazide was halved when I started the Byetta and I'm hoping that now I can ditch it altogether. I sometimes feel that my head is bursting with all the info but from what I have read, metformin (I have slow release glucophage) offers some protection to the heart while gliclazide puts more pressure on the pancreas. I am hoping to discuss this with my consultant on Tuesday.

thanks Jane. I'm going to see my GP tomorrow and discuss with him in more detail. He did say that Metfomin seems to reduce heart problems.
