Hba1c down from 54 to 51 in 3 months -"insignificant"?

4 months ago, after many years, I stopped taking simvastatin 40mg after reading research going back to 2000 about the impact of said statin pushing a significant number of people into type 2 diabetes. I made NO other lifestyle changes - ate drank exercised at same levels. So - is this drop significant or just a drop in the ocean?

Well it is downwards if not very far downwards. Both readings are inside the target band for diabetics so you have not yet broken through the lower limit of 47. I have no idea if statins brought the good news but I suspect that things you eat could have been the reason since although you have made no other life changes I am reasonable certain that you did not eat precisely the same meals this time.

I am intolerant of statins so I am not likely to suggest taking them again to see if your numbers go up but you could try eating fewer carbs to see if the numbers go further down.

Hi! Thx for reply. I finally got blood glucose meter 3 days ago. V interesting results so far so will see longer term what happens making dietary changes 1 at a time. Pre-meal BG range 4.6 - 6.1 spikes after meals from 8.7 up to 11.4; 12.7. Except last night when I had no wheat and no potato. Started pre-meal at 5.4. One hour later 6.2. Two hours after meal 6.2. Three hours later 5.9. This morning before breakfast 6.1. So steady till I ate porridge. 1 hour later 9.1. Early days but I am learning :)

Yes it seems you are getting the hang of it. I have said this many times on this board but here goes again. The four things most likely to cause you trouble are sugar, flour, potatoes and rice. You may find that one or two of them give more trouble than the others. Use your meter as you are doing.

There is no need to cut out these foods entirely but you may have to cut down on them if your meter results say so.

Incidentally, quite a lot of people include pasta in the list but I thought it was just another flour product anyway.

The NICE guidlines say that a test 2 hours after a meal should result in BS levels of less than 8.5. Some people aim a bit lower to make certain of it.

I support anyone that wants to experiment to find out what is going on but I think that readings taken after only one hour are more likely to scare you than to be of much use since they are usually higher than we would like. Still, like I said, experiment, find out and adjust meals. Keep notes of what you ate so you can refer back.
