I spoke to my diabetic nurse today and she said that my HbA1c levels were soaring at 98. Can anyone tell me what this means please? Many thanks.

Hba1c is an indicator of blood glucose levels over the previous 3 months. Targets for diabetics to indicate good control are in the range of around 45-50. Is your DN planning to do anything about it? If not I'd ask to see a doctor to discuss options

Hi Badcat, thanks for the info, my doctor has put me on Gliclazide, 160mg in the morning and 80mg before my evening meal. My BG is getting lower so hopefully there will be a difference next time. Many thanks

Hi. Yes, that figure is far too high so the Gliclazide should help. It's very important to review your diet and get hold of a meter such as the SD Codefree which has low cost test strips. Keep the carbs down and low GI using the meter to tell you which foods affect you most. Are you young and perhaps not overweight or the opposite? Sometimes younger patients who lose weight unexpectedly at diagnosis may actually be late onset T1s so do come back to askmore questions if you fit this category; otherwise hopefully with the diet and meds your HBA1c should reduce nearer to the recommended guideline level of 50'ish or below.

Somehow I think your nurse may have got this wrong, probably best to get this result confirmed.

Roy.

The OP has multiple health problems and a restricted diet to combat these.

Hi as Roy say, get a confirmation as to what your HBA1c is in "old money" and then let us know.
The new meds will help to lower your blood sugars but make your carers aware of what to do if you get a hypo as Glic can do this.
I think you are amazing and hope that with all the effort you are putting in that things will improve.

Take care.

CC.

Thanks so much everyone for your support and advice. My BG level was 17 when diagnosed (fasting test) and went up to 19.8 a few days later. I will be asking the nurse to confirm my HbA1c level.

I have recently had BG readings of as low as 2.3, but my nurse said that that was normal. I have spoken to my dietitian today and she was appalled at the nurses unhelpfull attitude.

I am 53 and wheelchair dependant, due to severe neuropathy in my right leg and foot, and am trying to lose weight which is difficult due to my other health issues. I will get back to you after I speak to the nurse aain. Many thanks.....

Hi, I have spoken to my dietitian and she says that my HbA1c level was 95 and hopefully now the Gliclazide is starting to work it will be lower at my next test. She also said that if my BG level falls below 4 then I have to trat it as a hypo. This as helped ne a bit, as I eventually managed to get my nurse to talk to me, and she wants to do another HbA1c test before I see my doctor again in a couple of weeks.
