Hi all,
I’ve just joined but as of yet am undiagnosed. I had the HBa1c test done and had a call this morning from the Doctors receptionist to say they want to repeat the test as the last one was insufficient. Does anyone know if this is common practice? I’m guessing my levels were high but they just want to repeat to double check? Or maybe I’m completely wrong? Any ideas? T.I.A
First test was done on Monday, I’m having it repeated next TuesdayHow long ago was the first test? They usually like to do two within a couple of weeks to double check..
Hi, thanks for reply. No, no trouble at all drawing the blood & the nurse had the tube well filled, so I’m not too sure what is going on?Hi and welcome! It’s quite possible that there wasn’t enough blood in the tube. Did they have trouble drawing the blood? If so next time make sure you are well hydrated and warm.
Thank you. I’m hoping that I will be ok, fingers crossedHi there! It happened to me. The GP receptionist called and asked me to come in for the second test as my BG level was " on the verge". Result of the second test showed I am diabetic. Well, I am sorry if that worries you, but there's still a hope for you..Best of luck!!
Maybe it’s a bluff (or a lie!) to get you to have the second test. I had my 2 tests 8 days apart.Hi, thanks for reply. No, no trouble at all drawing the blood & the nurse had the tube well filled, so I’m not too sure what is going on?
Thank you, that is good to knowNICE requires that at least two tests show someone has diabetes before the GP can make the diagnosis, the two tests should not be done on the same day. They often also do blood tests to see if you have an infection etc that could explain the result.
That was my initial thought too but I’m hoping I’ve got it wrong & all will be okMaybe it’s a bluff (or a lie!) to get you to have the second test. I had my 2 tests 8 days apart.
Thank you, yes a few people have said the sameWhen my repeat blood test was done I was told by the doctor to wait two weeks between them

Thank youHello and welcome.
If you are borderline or not much above/below borderline, the HbA1c is normally repeated to confirm matters. It may also be repeated whatever level you are. It is just routine.
Insufficient usually means that there wasn't enough blood available for.testing not that the results were insufficient. There's a marker on the bottle which the bottle fills to. I am assuming that you had a full blood count bottle (purple top) and that does require a lot of blood in it so it's perfectly possible. Nothing sinister, it happens a lot, and you have to get it done againHi, thanks for reply. Thank youThey may well be checking out to see if you may be pre diabetic.
If this turns out to be the case, I would recommend low carb diet and possibly try and lose weight as well.
You can avoid T2 altogether hopefully.
Best of luck!
Thank you. Yes, I did have the fbc done also so what you are saying makes perfect sense, hopefully I will get the all clearInsufficient usually means that there wasn't enough blood available for.testing not that the results were insufficient.
