HBA1C TEST

I have my 3 monthly HBA1C in the morning. I’ve been monitoring my blood sugar regularly. I’m not having a fasting blood test on the morning, just the HBA1C and all the other readings like cholesterol etc.

I’ve had a little treat tonight as it was a birthday. A small slice of chocolate cake and a cup of coffee.

Will this have a big impact as it’s a quarterly reading as I’ve monitored my blood well since August and am 18lbs lighter with good management of my carbs and making good choices with my food...?

Happy Birthday @DavidSilvaOlè! Well done on your weight reduction and carb management. One slice of cake isn't going to have any impact on the HbA1c test. I expect you will get a good result as a birthday present! :)

Let us know how you go on - and it would have been wiser for you to fast 12 hours or so before the test because you are having the cholesterol panel. Good luck. :)

In simple terms the HBA1c test measures how much sugar has stuck to your blood cells in the last three months. (Red cells are fully replaced every three months, hence it gives you a 3 month average reading). Eating one piece of cake will cause a minute amount of sugar to stick, but it is insignificant in terms of the average. The problem is of course that one piece can lead to two and then one piece a day and so on. Just make sure it is just an occasional treat.
