hi, i was booked in to have a liver test of some sort for the statins, but the phlebotomoist took my hba1c test as it is way before the 3 months is up and i hadnt fasted, is that ok? she said i didnt need to but im certain they made me fast for the first one, also if its a 3 month average as i believe would the fact that 3 weeks of that 3 months i was in the twenties before diag make this test higher than it would have been if taken after all the measures lowered it? i suggested i dont want it yet but she looked at me like i was crazy so i let her do it... there are 2 questions in there somewhere, any advice greatly received as always, Thanks
Andy

HbA1c doesn't need fasting.
It gives a broad picure of what your blood glucose levels have been during the last 3 months or so since all your erythrocytes[ red cells] have been renewed. It's biased towards the most recent 2 weeks. Thus if it's less than 3 months since you started to take control of your blood sugar, you will get a higher reading than if it were more than 3 months.

I agree with Hana there is no requirement to fast for the HbA1c blood test.

Fasting is however generally required for a full lipid panel or a breakdown of cholesterol into Triglycerides (trigs), HDL and LDL which you may have had done last time

Thankyou for your replies, id kinda hoped they would be doing cholestrol test too but oh well Thanks

Hi, i got back the test results, i dont understand any of them (not a surprise) but the doc has asked to see me... my hbc number is 56, when diagnosed it was 106 which of course is much better but i cant help feeling disapointed i was hoping for lower and maybe it would have been if they had waited 2 weeks, i really dont know why i feel so bad about it but i do

Mine was done today too, 72 down from 130 (had to get help working out what they meant haha). I wish mine could have been 56!!! That is really good and a major improvement. I have no excuse as in T1 and so insulin should do it but you've gotten that down yourself

Hi, thanks for the reply, Well done to you for your results , its not that im not pleased to be down i was just in cuckoo land thinking i was going to be a medical miracle and they would say your amazing you have cured yourself you are a shining example and from now on we will change our advice and tell diabetics to go low carb, maybee even name a diet or two after me oh and of course take me off all medication maybee even change the name of metformin to andyformin, i supposed i hoped for just a tad too much. *sigh*

Maybe next time! Congrats on getting it down to 56. That shows a lot of dedication to your health. Well done.
