I was told I had type 2 in 2004 after a routine blood test showed my sugars were high, since then I have my hba1c test yearly, My last test was 6.5, I am diet only, but my gp said I should take metform, three times a day, well after seeking adivce from aother gp and diabetes helpline, they seem to think my test was fine , and to see what this years brings . I dont really want to take all those tablets each day, if my test is fine, he seems to be starting them a little ealry. And does'nt seem to like me making a commemt on my test. And three seem rather a lot. as I aslo take statins. He asked about the tablets when I see him for other things, but I say nothing, Has anyone had this type of problem with there gp?
As for blood tests , why are we not reminded about our hba1c tests? It seems you have to go from memeory, which is not always good from most people? I get a yearly letter for my eye test, so why not your blood test, if you are diet only this is very important? If anyone has got any comments on this ,I would be please to here.

Sadly, the levels of care and expertise offered to diabetics by GP's vary greatly. I am lucky that my own surgery has a great dedicated diabetic care team who contact me every year when my check up is due and provide an excellent service; others are not so fortunate.

If you are unhappy with your GP's advice or the care you are receiving, you are entitled to get a second opinion, change doctor or to ask to be treated at a hospital based diabetic clinic if you prefer. It is important that you try and find the best care team you can. Good luck!

My Health Centre is fairly good. They remember tha annual check, but the 6 month one I have to organise myself. I've had the blood test card in my handbag since February, ready for July. Since I'm VERY difficult to take blood from, I am permitted to go to the hospital. Easy patients have to go the the Health Centre.. I'm so difficult, I have made a point of remembering the name of the phlebotomist who doesn't hurt.( It's Alice)

My practice is half way in between. Supposedly I have a six monthly Medication Review, usually with a nurse, which I'm supposed to remember to book (the date is on the prescription repeats) and if I don;t they will stop my meds soon after, which concentrates the mind a bit!

The downside is that I am disallowed the most useful tests like full lipid panel, and last time they even missed off the A1c, however the vampire knows me and lets me biro them back on the form, the GP turns a blind eye as the results are generally good. Last time I forgot to apply, I took in my BG and BP graphs and the GP wrote me up for another six months anyway, I don't mind saving her money like that!

I gather that the massive financial deficit of our newly formed PCT has mostly been clawed back now so it will be interesting to see if they are a bit less restrictive in future. I still won't expect test strips though.
