Good morning all,

I am new to all this. Can anyone tell me how I can get to know what my HbA1c is.
I have seen a lot of information regarding HbA1c but cannot understand how I get the results. I have kept all my BG counts and have read that you have to a average from them.
Sorry if the question sounds daft, but like I say I am very new.
Thank you

The HbA1c needs to be measured from a blood sample in a laboratory. You can estimate it from finger pricks but the accuracy can be a little off and it depends how many times you test. Here is an explanation of HbA1c https://www.diabetes.co.uk/what-is-hba1c.html

Good morning, and welcome to the forum :)
I find that the easiest way is to use an app. Plot in all your readings, and let your app do the maths for you. Lots of people in here use mysugr, but I prefer BG monitor.
I'm sure someone will come along shortly and tell you how to do it without an app, though.

If you go to the home page on this site, search for Hba1c and navigate to the converters, you can convert your average BG reading to HBa1c. I don't know how accurate it is, but it will give you some indication. I have used my 90 day average from my monitor

Hi and welcome @davgre

If you are a newly diagnosed diabetic (which it looks like from your post), then it is very likely that you had your HbA1c tested at diagnosis. If you don't know what that result was, then you can get the number from your doc, nurse or the receptionist.

Once diagnosed, we should all be asked back in for regular checkups, and the HbA1c is usually run as part of that process. This can be every 3 months, or less often, depending on how well controlled our blood glucose is.

Since the HbA1c shows a rough averge of blood glucose levels for the last 2-3 months, with emphasis on the last few weeks, there is no point having tests too often, but if you have any concerns, why not ring your surgery and ask to schedule in an HbA1c. They may say no, but there is no harm in asking! :)
