Hi All,

I've been reading a few treads on HbA1c and the results are shown as a %.
I've had some results sent to me where by it state HbA1c: 140 mmol/mol

How does this translate into a % ?

Total Cholesterol 4.4 mmols/l
HDL 1.3
Triglycerides 3.2
Creatinine 77 umols/l
ACR 2.3mg/mmol

Thanks

Are you sure that was the figure they quoted? I ask because it is exceptionally high!

Elc is right. That figure just seems 'wrong.'

some illustrative figures
(HbA1c - old system/ new system/ average blood sugar level in mmol/L) (mmol/L is the UK measurement, so no need to translate to US figures)

6 % / 42 mmol/mol / 7.6 mmol/L
8 % / 64 mmol/mol / 11.6 mmol/L
10 % / 86 mmol/mol / 15.5 mmol/L

your mmol/mol translates to an HbA1c (old style) of 14.96 and an AVERAGE blood sugar of 25.3.

That is VERY high.

Geoff

Hi All, yes this was the figure quoted. It was in a letter they sent me, along with loads of other reading. see below.

Is this somethin to worry about with being high. As the Dr / Nurse hasnt mentioned it

Episode type Clic
I 24.2 kg/m^2
HbA1c 140 mmol/mol
Total Cholesterol 4.4 mmols/l
HDL 1.3 mmols/l
Triglycerides 3.2 mmols/l
Weight 68.3kg
BP 148/95 mm hg <- They metioned this was a little high, but I had ben driving for 1hr before hand, so could be due to that.
Creatinine 77 umols/l
ACR 2.3mg/mmol
CV Risk 3%

I should note, this was the first HbA1c reading I've been given since all this started.
I assuming now I have started insulin, and getting better BG reading. This Hb1Ac reading should come down on the next check?

Could it be a typo error?

I have a typo in my latest report stating that I inject 36 units of Humalog at each meal when it should read 3 - 6 units!

Ask to have a printout of the results in addition to the transcription you already have.

I'm a little confused because your profile says you've been diagnosed for a year, is this your first HbA1c in a year? If that's a mistake and you're recently diagnosed and put on insulin then a high HbA1c is not unusual following diagnosis and once insulin treatment is started and your readings fall into an acceptable level the HbA1c should fall as well. Have you been shown how to carb count and adjust your bolus insulin to cover the carbs you're eating?

April 2012 I was diagnosed - Type 1, since April 2012.
I'll take a look at my profile shortly maybe theres a typo :-) in there.

I'll email the DC ands double check for the typo. Thanks

Crab counting no not yet. Still awaiting for that. And also waiting on the DAFNE course later in the year.

April this year is still very newly diagnosed so I'm sure that HbA1c will come down now that you're on insulin :) The HbA1c is an indication of what your average blood glucose has been for the past 2 to 3 months. When you were first diagnosed and shortly before, your blood glucose was probably very high and that's why your result is very high too. You want to see that number fall now as a high HbA1c long term puts you at a much higher risk of diabetic complications which you will want to avoid.

If you don't already have it get yourself a copy of the book called Type 1 Diabetes in Children, Adolescents and Young Adults (available at Amazon), it provides very comprehensive information about type 1 and is a must read for anyone who wants to get it all under control as much as possible. Don't be put off by the title, yes it's very good for children but it does cover adults too and all the information is very relevant to you.

And I agree about the carb counting, start teaching yourself now don't wait until later in the year for the course. Still go on the course but in the meantime start learning to count the carbs.
