I have just been to see the diabetic consultant and I've long had quite high levels my HBA1c last year was 86 ish then in February it was down to 78. Last week my latest results came back as 76 my consultant was pleased with this and says it's coming down. Then I asked what is the ideal target, she said 58. I'm worried that I will never be able to achieve 58 as I've always been high once when pregnant I managed 66 has been my best ever, but really what I'm most interested in, Is the average HBA1c for everyone? As it might give some hope, thanks

I was diagnosed T1 in February with an hba1c of 132, in a review the beginning of April it was 75. My next review is the beginning of September, I hope to have dropped even further by then. I don't expect as drastic a change though next time around. Somewhere around 65 would be awesome and show progress!

Hi. It would be impossible define an average HBa1C. The best thing to work from is what is the 'right' target level for an HBa1C i.e. the area a non-diabetic would have. This should be somewhere between 5% (31mmol) and 6% (42mmol), although many diabetics will find it difficult to stay that low and anything below 7% (53 mmol) in old money isn't too bad. Are you keeping your carb intake at a sensibly low level? This is important in controlling blood sugar.

Yes I mostly do a low carb diet. But sometimes it's hard to fit it all in around a busy family life

Yes I try to stick to a low carb diet sometimes it's hard what with a busy family life. I think that as a mum we often put ourselves last on the looking after list
