I know its an average of the last three months but can someone give me a brief explanation? I still don't quite understand it.

Also, when I have tried to read about it the result has always been a percentage whereas mine is a whole number.

It was 96 when diagnosed and after first test it's now 39 and I was told it was good but quite low. How much do I need to worry, should I try to change it?

HbA1c is basically an indirect measurement of your blood glucose level over the last 3 months or so, with about 50% weighted to the last month. It's a measure of how glycated your red blood cells are, which are completely replaced every 3 months or so.

Using this online tool (http://www.diabetes.co.uk/hba1c-to-blood-sugar-level-converter.html), 39 mmol/mol is about an average of 6.5 mmol/L.

However, since it's an average it doesn't tell you how high or low you've been. The concern for type 1 diabetics is going hypo, which as you know can lead to death. So, the concern is that if your HbA1c is low, then you may be flirting with too many hypos.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the reply.
I understand it a little more now. Quite strange though, only had two hypos over the last few weeks and 90-95% of the readings have been within the target. Thought it would of been a little higher

2 hypo's over a few weeks is perfectly acceptable as long as you felt them coming on and treated them yourself, very few people manage to avoid them altogether as there's so many factors that can cause hypo's, in % terms your Hba1c is 5.7 which is very good :)

Yeah that amount of hypos have dropped a lot, I find it quite easy to notice them arm but sometimes I do get it wrong and it's still over 4 ;(
Okay, great...I've been booked in for another one in January so hopefully it's atays steady :)
