hbac1 question

I've got a hbac1 blood test booked next Thursday and I wanted to know what it's all about as I do not have a any knowledge about it and have been diabetic now for 9 months. I may have had it explained to me when I was diagnosed but I just want to refresh my memory on what it is as I've just turned 20 today and want to turn my life around now and leave my horrible teen years and try to lose 10 stone.

Along with my hbac1 I am having my cholesterol and thyroid tested and I am bit worried on what levels they are at. I am going to start low carbing when I go to back to university as I am finding it trouble to get started now, also I am going to attend the DESMOND course in August. Does anyone have any suggestions on which low carb book would be good as I want to cut out all bread, pastries, crisps, potatoes and pasta.

Hi Big_Daddy,

HbA1c measures your glycosylated hemoglobin. Basically, when our blood glucose levels are high, some of the glucose sticks to the some of the hemoglobin in your blood. The amount depends on how high your BG is. Once it has stuck, it is there until the blood cell is replaced - about 120 days in most people. That means that your HbA1c is a good indicator of average BG levels over the last 3 months, but it is weighted towards the last few weeks.

Ewwww I wished I'd known about the three week thing I ate fish and chips last night :(

Dr Bernsteins diabetes solution is a book with lots of info on why you should low carb and it has some recipes. I have heard really good things about the low-carb gourmet cookbook by Karen Barnaby (look on amazon for it) but haven't used it myself.

Type into google low carb recipes and I'm sure you'll get tons of options and recipes and websites.

Good luck!
