hya,
it sounds like your having palpitations,
i too suffer from them i have had lots of tests and my heart is ok i just kick off ectopic beats quite often, its not very nice but is harmless,
saying that palpitations can be a sign of something serious so it does need checking out,
causes of harmless palpitations can be meds, caffeine, stress, thyroid problems amongst many others,if i can help any more just ask

Hi Totsy

Do you know if it can be connected with the nerve system? As I feel sticking nerves around the heart when Im low on sugar and feel pressure on chest when high (over 11.00). Is it connected? - here in China the doctors seems to have a problem when you mention nerve system - its like "what? your weak man?"

hya kim,
its the electrical impulses that cause them,i really dont know about the nerves though, ive never heard of palpitations caused by diabetes itself, i will see what i can found out tho

Are you on any medication, or are you controlling diabetes by diet and exercise alone? Diabetes itself doesn't cause palpitations, but they can be a side effect of the drugs that are sometimes used to control it. Palpitations can also be a sign of thyroid disease - and that is one of the many possible complications of diabetes, so if you haven't recently had a thyroid function test then getting one done would probably be a good idea. If you have had a full blood screening done recently (probably when you were diagnosed) then it is highly likely that a T3 test was done - and that would probably pick up on thyroid problems.

Alternatively, there are lots of other causes of palpitations that have nothing at all to do with diabetes. Usually they aren't serious, and sometimes they can be very easy to fix. For example a really common cause is an adverse reaction to caffeine - try giving up coffee, tea, coke etc. and see if that makes any difference.

Hi, palpitations can be caused by too much stress/worry/anxiety, too much caffeine, vitamin/mineral deficiency, anaemia, thyroid problems, and sometimes heart disease, so be firm with that doctor or see another one and demand this is investigated.

I had them and I know they can be scary, sometimes I had a couple of what seemed extra heartbeats as if I had missed some before and sometimes some really rapid heartbeats that would go on for a couple of minutes, I panicked and this made them worse, I got into a viscious cycle there, palpitations ---> panic ---> palpitations; then I learnt some relaxation techniques and I havent had any since.

Do you have any other symptoms like fainting, chestpains, nausea, sweating wien they happen? Are you taking any medicines?

I have found a forum about palpitations, here is the link http://www.resonancedirect.com/bbs/72.html

I hope all goes well for you

Hi all

Thanks for helping me! I have been 8 days in the hospital to get my diabetes numbers adjusted and Im now between 4.5-6.8 - 10.0 after a meal - but it drops quickly down back to around 5.5 which is my sort of normal level now - (avarage is 6.8 on my blood sugar tester). I was diagnosed in Jan this year but was first put on Metformin (3 tablets a day) which took my number of 19.8 down to 11.7 within 7 days - then I had Ketones and was put on 500ml insulin drop which took the Ketones out and took me further down to 8.9. Then I was put on 10units 24 hours Sanofi insulin per day - no tablets - which kept my level at 9.9 but after some time "fooling" around with 3 different hospitals in Shanghai (I live in China) I got tired of not getting anywhere with my sugar levels and went to a special clinic for diabetes when I was diagnosed for Neuropathy and having nerves playing different body zones and heavy headaches. In the hospital they put me on 12units of insulin daily and 3 Metformin tablets, Aspirin and VB12 and another medicament which I can give you the name of later to get rid of my Neuropathy (hands, feet buzzing and groin(and no action anymore downstairs)).

During my time in the hospital my sugar was down to 4.5-6.8 with short highs at 10 after eating. And now its been 2 weeks and my hands have no Neuropathy anymore my groin has an ulcer (healing) - and he works again thank god! - and I still have some pain in my feets and one toe has an ulcer which is healing - slowly....

My heart however still jumps and I will get straight on to check if I had a T3 test!!!!!!!!!

I also had some other medicaments in the hospital which I can list to you ASAP and they gave me some special fat-killing teas which have made me loose 10 kilos in 13 days in conjunction with taking the Metformin/diet of course (took my blood fat level down from 3.78 to 2.1 within the period - NO RIPTOR) - the teas are unbelievable as they also helps taking my sugar down.

Teas are:

WULONG TEA

MA BIAN CAO TEA

Palpitations have been reported as a side effect of Metaformin. It isn't one of the common side effects, but is is recognised. If the palpitations started at the same time you started taking the Metaformin, then there is a good chance that this is the root cause. However, do remember that it could be something else - either trivial or not. Do you drink a lot of tea? That does have bad effects on some people. With a bit of Googling I found that Wu-Long tea is a medium caffeine content tea - it has more than green tea but not as much as black tea. I couldn't find out how much, if any, there is in Ma-Bian-Cao tea.

The advice to lean hard on your doctor to get this sorted out is certainly good. If it is an adverse reaction to Metaformin then you might need your medication changed.

Thanks - really helpful - the problem is that they only have two different meds for diabetes - but I will get right on to it! Im going to have the T3 test today and a CT to see how my heart and nerves are doing - no buzzing in feets anymore - so think my Neuropathy is at rest.

Palpitations over - stopped tea - and it helped - my Metformin doesnt seem to have any impact - thanks for all the good advise!!!!!! - this forum is a great help I must say!

Now still fighting a tiny bit with my Neuropathy which I thought had fully gone for a while but which does pop up once and a while if I sit too long while working. So I need to get on my office fitness-bike a lot more in between. At home I spent 30 mins in front of the telly on my bike there - I dread all the horror statistics of us all being gone within a decade on this illness....

Diet wise Im still confused what to eat - as my doctor says I can eat everything as long it is in moderations - apart from fat meat (lamb and meat by the bone) - fat-free meat should be OK then - (filet steak is ok? Chicken breast?) - vegs - yes also I eat like a cow lol.....and I try to keep away from white bread. Pasta I do eat - and potatoes as well. I dont eat sweets - I allow myself a treat once a week (chocolate bar) - my readings are still 4.5-6.8 and my top level after meal is now down to 9.2 from around 10 - my average is 6.8 - which I believe to be too high(?) - so now I ask the real pro's whats a good average? - and how do you achieve it diet wise?
