Heart missing a beat

I had my 6 monthly check with the surgery nurse today. Everything seemed to go well. I was a bit disappointed that my Hba1c level had remained the same at 48 ( without medication) but she was pleased with that. I put it down to the dawn phenomena ! She said liver, kidneys were great. Cholesterol still above where they would like it but no huge worry. She then took my blood pressure, and even though I get the "white coat syndrome effect" that came out fine at 120/80. Then , out of the blue and for the first time ever , she took my pulse. Looked a bit oddly at me and said my heart had missed a couple of beats.. I hadn't felt any different, so off she went to get the ECG machine... yup, that confirmed it.. my heart misses beats ??
She has made me an appointment with the doctor tomorrow morning, and I'm wondering what to expect ?
I consider myself fairly fit, walk miles and dance for hours with no ill effects.
Does anyone else have this ?

Yes, about ten years ago for a few months. Lots of tests, but no issues were found. It went away by itself.

Thanks. Had you noticed anything or was yours picked up on a check like mine ? I feel fine but am expecting to be poked prodded, tested and medicated
 
Just back from GP.. Today I'm normal ?? Had another ECG and it says it looks like a normal sinus arrhythmia, which is basically your heart adjusting to the way you're breathing.. phew. big relief, as he was discussing warfarin if it was the ventricular fibrillation.

I noticed it. I also had a bit of tachycardia (elevated heart beat rate) and noticed the occasional skipped heart beat when I checked my pulse. I don't think there are any medications for it. From Dr. Google info it seems to usually just happens without any serious issues related to it.
 
I sometimes get it after getting in bed at night. I can sort of feel it, so I check my own pulse and notice the odd beat being missed, but this doesn't happen at other times. Several years ago I mentioned it as a side discussion to my GP. She wasn't concerned and said it happens to most people. Since then I went through a cancer treatment that can be hard on the heart so had routine electrocardiograms every 3 months for a year (the ones where a doctor scans your heart for about 20 minutes) and had normal rhythms.
 
It happens to me occasionally too, but I've had two normal ECGs this year, so haven't worried about it since.
 
About 10 years ago I went to a and e with chest pains. They took a reading and my heart had skipped a beat and so for the first time in my adult life I was admitted to hospital. They carried out various tests. All seemed fine apart of the presence of sugar in my blood ..... The rest is history!

It was a bit of a worry overnight and I really didn't fancy starting on warfarin so I'm really happy it all worked out OK.
 
I get it quite a lot, and was put on a 24 hour monitor a few years ago. The cardiologist decided to give me beta blockers, which made me feel so ill I refused to continue with them.
It comes and goes and is often worst at night. My GP says I should just ignore it!
The strange thing is that it was really bad palpitations and missed beats that took me to A and E where they diagnosed diabetes. They said that those symptoms were nothing to do with diabetes. When I got my blood sugar down though, the palpitations eased.
I've had several electrocardiograms, but they always say the results are 'normal'.
 
I don't think I have ever had a normal ECG test .. in-fact my heart nurse said she would worry if I got a normal reading .. as we all agree I am not normal .. But I do have a lot of damage on my heart from heart attacks and bypass op .. The good thing is that I am still breathing and my heart is still beating ..
 
I have this too. Had triple bypass and aortic valve replaced 4 yrs ago. Sometimes when I get to bed it plays up a bit. Palpitations seem part of life these days

My husband also suffers from it - he had an aortic root replacement, aortic valve replacement and pace-maker fitted about nine years ago. His cardiologist told him last week that the tracings from his pace maker shows it happens regularly but he doesn't feel it! Like @Enclave his heart is not the best particularly as his diseased valve affected his heart muscle but he's still going!
 
Hi Daisy, I have had these problems for years and eventually I had to be on an anti coagulant and I now have a pacemaker . It is essential you maintain a good level of potassium. I would have hoped your GP would have checked your U&E's to see if your blood electrolytes are in balance. Salt
/sodium causes potassium to be lost so I would watch my sodium intake if I was you.

Yes I had to go to A&E with this a month ago. It wasn't just missed beats but my heart was racing also.I now have to take a daily anticoagulant because I was told that during a missed beat I could have a stroke from clotting. OK, but I now need a tooth extraction and the subsequent bleeding could be a problem. Seeing the dentist next week but don't know what they can do. Certainly the slightest nick causes prolonged bleeding, so if an anticoagulant is prescribed for anyone else, just be aware it could be a problem. The arrhythmia is fine now after heart rate reducing tablets.

Hi Wiggygran, Sounds like you have the kind of atrial fibrillation that speeds up your heart. The anticoagulation prevent clots forming in the heart when it does not pump properly. Potassium can help this condition it occurs less with your potassium between 4.5 and 5.0. Speak to your doctor about stopping your anti coags for a couple of days before your dental extraction because they are not likely to do the job when you are anticoagulated. I have atrielfibrilation started 3yrs ago I have had type 1for24yrs and wonder if highs and lows of b/s play a part as I have always worked out and walk a lot and maintained a healthy diet so one never knows.

I hate taking bets blockers and warfarin
