Hi there i am type two diabetic, I have suffered with angina for over a year now and am on 7.5mg of bisoporol and 75 mg of aspirin and gnt spray when i need too. I went to see the cardiologist today for an update he told me to my surprise that the diabetes has affected the small arteries around my heart and they are causung my angina pain. i am very upset about this . the cardiologist wants to do an angiogram on me also . Has anyone on here been told they have heart problems due too diabetes or had an angiogram who could advise me I AM REALLY WORRIED. any advice would be gratefully appreciated, thanks x

Hello Starlight! :)

I had a angiogram back in June, there's nothing to worry about as the procedure takes around 20-30 mins and you are wide-awake and free to watch the screen should you choose, they use a local anesthetic on the area where the tube goes in and the most you will feel is the tube entering your chest area which gives a warm/tingling sensation. Here is an article about the procedure from The British Heart Foundation:

Hiya I have had 3 angiograms and had no pain whatsoever during the procedure other than when the needle to numb the area where the camera goes in but that is more like a injection type pain. I watched the screen during the procedure and was amazed at what can be done whilst you are awake.

I have had 3 stents fitted in my arteries following a heart attack in dec 2009. To be honest the fear of what might of been was worse than what actually happened. I fully sympathise with you though as i was terified the first time - if i was honest going to the dentist is worse. If they decide to put in any stents whilst doing the angiogram - the most i felt during this was a kind of skipped heart beat and the surgeons explain all whats going on. I was shocked to find out one of my arteries was 100% blocked and one 90% blocked. I still suffer from angina pains on a regular basis but am on bisoprolol, aspirin and gtn tablets (the gtn tablets were given to me to ease the angina pain giving me a constant dose of gtn) I also have a gtn spray to use if ever i feel the need to. Have been advised to keep my chloresterol to bout 4 to lower the risk to my heart for which i take artorvorstatin tablets. When u go for your angiogram they will explain everything that will happen during the procedure and will talk you through every step that they are going to do. You have to take things easy for a week afterwards depending on what site they insert the camera - I had one done through the groin and was amazed how little pain i felt. Was a little bruised afterwards but was fine. Also had one through the wrist - as i have a small wrist and arm i suffered some pain after that one but nothing some anti inflamatories didnt ease - apparantly when u have a small arm the camera can cause a small amount of inflamation but to be honest most dont suffer at all. After the angio through the wrist they put a tight band/strap around the site where the injection went in - which basically gives pressure to prevent any bleeding from the site but that is removed before u leave them. I wish you luck and hope you receive good news following your angiogram. If you want you can email me on [email address removed] I am online most eves sorry if i have waffled on a bit haha

Hi starlight1,

I have had 5 Angiograms in the last 12 months...4 of them resulting in angioplasty's and the insertion of 10 stents in total.

Not sure whether diabetes led to the heart disease or just a coincidence, but i wasn't diagnosed diabetic until after 3rd angioplasty.

As everyone else has said the angiogram is nothing to worry about and the worst thing about it is the insertion into the area they numb. I too watched it on the monitors as they carried out the procedure.

As in alll surgery there can be complications, but these are very rare, and the cardiologists seem to see them happen before you realise somethings going on.

Don't worry about it.

Good luck

Tony
