Hi. just wondered if any of you in the T2 Forum get a lot of indigestion related to diabetes. I was put on Lanzoprazole 30mg x 2 daily and Peptac Liquid (like Gaviscon). I can only say it has got worse and was offered a referral for upper endoscopy but declined (had enough of invasive procedures, lot of time in hospitals lately).
I read somewhere on the internet that high HbA1c levels for years can damage the vagus nerve and other nerves in your digestive system. It's getting to the stage I don't look forward to eating as I know the pain will come later. Thanks

I also suffer from reflux and am on Lanzoprazole 30mg once a day. I saw the consultant at the hospital as the reflux affected my throat. He suggested raising the head of the bed by 4" and that has been marvellous so we now sleep on a bit of an incline and my husbands snoring is also improved. Result! Just don't have silk sheets.

I suffered from reflux since my teens, but controlled it by:

Eating small frequent meals
Avoid caffeine or spicy food
Eating a really high fat meal
Proton pump inhibitors (doctor prescribed)

And now I've Just realized that carbs (and processed carbs) can also be a culprit. After doing the low carb diet for weeks now I've noticed that I haven't got a lot of digestion issues compared before. Or maybe I've always been carb-intolerant and haven't put much thought of it then til diagnosed with T2.

There's been a recent discussion of reflux here: http://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/acid-reflux-and-fats.60756/

I had reflux way before my diabetes diagnosis and put it down to diet much more than I do to diabetes. Since removing starchy carbs and processed food from my diet, my reflux issues have improved greatly.
Snap!! Even had an endoscopy 7 years ago, got put on lansaprozole daily- was ok as long as i didnt miss one, since diagnosed 3 weeks ago and going lchf i hardly ever need the lansaprozole!!

Thanks all for the tips and advice. I saw my doctor on Fri and accepted a referral for upper endoscopy. I wasn't too keen on it as I have had a 3 endoscopies the other way due to bowel disease and bowel surgery...ouch lol

I only have problems if I'm eating too much wheat - it wakes me up, choking and coughing in the middle of the night.

Once I get back on the straight and narrow with my eating, it clears within 24 hrs.
