Is anyone else suffering with this heat and their insulin. I have recently (about 6 weeks ) starting trying to eat a low carb diet however the past 2 nights I have crashed down to 2.6 with my blood. I have to take humalog after breakfast and dinner ( 2, 4 units) last night blood was 12.2 before dinner I had chicken salad and 3 units of insulin within a hour I had crashed. Tonight blood was 11.2 before dinner had an omlette and 2 units of humalog and a hour and a half later again crash.

Does anyone have any advice? My boyfriend thinks I should miss my insulin. I do not agree

Hey there!

I really don't think you should miss your insulin - at least not without taking medical advice.

Are you sure it's the heat causing your hypos? Have you adjusted your doses since starting a low carb diet? Most of us find that we reduce our insulin requirement significantly when low carbing. I see you are Type 2. Reducing your carb intake will probably give your pancreas a chance to keep up. It might also help to reduce any insulin resistance. Both these things would mean a reduction in your insulin requirements.

Maybe reduce your dose, but if you have another hypo, go and discuss your new needs with your GP or DSN.

Some people say that the hot weather reduces their insulin requirements while others say it increases their's. It doesn't do anything very much to mine - at least I don't think it does. I would say it is more likely to be the effect of your new diet.

Hi,

26 degrees here today, normal carb ratio sent me hypo within an hour of dinner - had the usual sort of meal, not extra fatty (as if that was possible) or anything.

Do split bolus if you suspect your insulin works better or kicks in faster in the heat.

Half at the start, half after 1 hour when you know what is going to happen.

Caught mine at 3.5 today. Had forgotten from last time how I seem to need 30 percent less NovoRapid. Won't make that error again tomorrow.

The heat decreases my insulin usage, try cutting back on your humalog insulin rather than not injecting anything at all and see if that helps, don't forget you can also contact your diabetes care team and ask for their advice.
