Type 2
Hi

I was diagnosed type 2 about 5 yrs ago, Was put on to metformin and my dose is now up to 3 tablets a day.
My last hba1c test in Nov came in at 54.

However 2 months a go my blood readings suddenly shot up to 15 minimum and no matter how low carb I eat or how much I exercise they are constantly between 15 and 25. I just received results of my new hba1c test and it came in at 94.

The nurse is now adding a new tablet to my regime 1 x 80mg daily Gliclazide. starts tomorrow morning.

I should add that I am 49, fit get plenty of exercise through my job ( postman ) and weigh around 10 stone ( underweight ). Have trouble putting on weight since I was diagnosed.

I was put on a new eye drop around the same time as my blood sugars went nuts Brinzolomide could that have effected anything.

Anyways I guess I'm kinda at a low point and was looking for any kind of advice or help / support.

Thanks for reading.

@Zzenith Hi

Has slow onset Type 1 been ruled out?

Can you give us an idea of a day's food for you?

And would you like me to move your thread to Ask A Question where you'll get more replies?

My diet is reasonably decent I think.

4am - Alpro plain yoghurt with 25g berries and 30g of crushed mixed nuts.
7:30am scrambled eggs at work or a homemade porridge ( 15g pin head porridge, unsweetened coconut, almond flour, crushed nuts and alpro milk )
11:30am packed lunch salad with either eggs, ham, salmon or mackeral
4:30pm various suppers but all based on meat and veg no starches

Snacks are usually raw veg, yoghurt or and nuts Mon to Fri

The weekend I usually treat myself to a small cake or 2 biscuits on a Sat and Sun dinnertime.

Please move the thread if you think it will help

Thanks

Welcome Zzenith,
it sounds like you might be LADA rather than T2. LADAs are often diagnosed as T2 by GPs, who are used to T1s starting in early life.
LADAs have a honeymoon period lasting from a few months to a few years, when their insulin production is sufficient for non-insulin treatment. You may have reached your cliff. I went from good control (for 4 1/2 years) to an HbA1c of 104. Started insulin within weeks. Problem solved.
If nothing else is going on, like some new chronic health problem, sounds like you might need to push your GP. Is there a Diabetes Clinic you can get referred to ?
A GAD test for antibodies may help but is not definitive either way.

I wish you well in resolving your problem
Geoff
p.s. I felt **** for several weeks, running sugars in the 20s. Guess you do too !

Well it sounds like your diet is good so no worries there maybe there is another problem causing your high sugars and Lada could be one answer

Looking at your diet, I'd suggest Type 1 is a possibility too. If you're only being seen by your GP, ask for a referral to a consultant and specifically ask that they look at the possibility of Type 1.

Far too many adults are assumed to be Type 2 simply because they're adults, but a surprising number are actually Type 1.

If you are a slow onset Type 1, then starting insulin sooner rather than later can preserve your remaining beta cells for longer. In addition, some meds prescribed for Type 2s aren't suitable for Type 1s.

Whats LADA ?

My diabetic nurse just said that I may or may not go onto insulin at some point but for now she want me to go this new medication. I can pop in by tomorrow and see her if I need to. If so what should I ask her
