Hi - as others have said...it's all about diet..and testing at key times in the day is essential...so if you can't pressure the health experts into issuing a meter, you need to buy one.. a quick question posted will no doubt receive lots of recommendations on the best and cheapest meter and strips. It cannot be stressed enough, however much it annoys some people who seem to be upset at continual references to low carb diets (despite the fact that newly diagnosed people need to be advised of its potential), that cutting out all simple carbs is the way to get the levels down and to keep them down. Inform yourself but asking questions and looking at forums...once you get the meter get back to us about the best times to use it, and then get used to recording what you eat, when you eat it, and what the levels are like before and a couple of hours after....that is how you will put yourself n control. get a meter....abandon toast, cereal, spuds, pasta, rice etc....drink plenty of fluid...walk...and relax with the confidence that you are sorting the levels out yourself.
