I do not have diabetes
Hey, I'm not even sure I should be here yet as I have no diagnoses, but I had gestational diabetes in 2018. I went to A&E Saturday night struggling to breathe, no big deal figured it was my severe hayfever causing it (I take steroids for it). Turns out my blood sugars were 12.1 and then when I did the finger prick test two hours later they had raised to 15.2 but ketones were 0.2 so I was sent home and told to get my HBA1C sorted. I'm a worrier so purchased a testing kit and I've been high since averaging 14-15 with highest 23.6. GP have asked me to test but gave no instructions as to when or how often, so I'm testing before food and two hours after. I've just been getting messages from the GP via a receptionist and haven't actually spoke to a Dr yet. I don't know if they want me to be careful what I eat or if I should carry on as normal, although my emotions are all over the place I'm not sleeping and so had no energy to exercise either. I am feeling so sick with worry, I don't know if they think it's type 2 or if it's steroid induced or something else. I have ARFID so changing my diet is a huge deal for me and is causing a lot of the anxiety. I've got my HBA1C booked for today so fingers crossed I can get some answers soon. Thanks for reading

Hello, @lilxamz . Of course you are welcome here, if you have concerns about diabetes.
Hopefully your consultation today will help, though I understand how anxious you must be feeling. You should get the HbA1c test result in a few days, which will determine whether or not you have diabetes. You may or may not be given medication, depending on that.

Your ARFID condition will, as I understand it, be a barrier to you making changes to diet, but not insurmountable. First things first, though. Get a diagnosis, then members here can offer targetted advice and support. Though do keep reading, and asking questions.

Wishing you well.

Stress (such as a visit to A&E) is a known factor in raising blood sugar. The good thing about Hba1c test is it is basically a 3 month average so providing you have not had acute stress for a prolonged period over the last 3 months , then hopefully your result will be better than you expect. Good luck and try not to worry.

People have to work around their issues with foods often, here.... From sensitivities and fodmap triggers to allergies, being bothered by certain textures or following certain religious or principled guidelines. More often than not though, there's ways around it. And if there aren't, or not enough, there's still medication and such on the table. You're not entirely out of options, okay? So try to breathe, as stress can up glucose too, and keep telling yourself you're not diagnosed yet, nor are any changes required as long as you aren't ready for them, okay? You have a say in this and work-arounds might be more easily found than you might think. You won't have to look for them by yourself, we're right here.

Hugs and good luck!
Jo

At the start, things are daunting and very scary. But as you get a proper diagnosis, and gradually learn, things become a lot clearer. I wouldn't say it's always easy living with diabetes, but more often than not, it's a lot easier than you think at the present time. Above all else DON'T panic, just go with the flow until you know where you actually are.

Thank you everyone, all your comments have really helped to calm me down and reassure me that I will be able to manage this. The Drs moved my blood test to tomorrow as the nurse was off sick so fingers crossed I can get the results soon.
