I did a post a long time ago as i was depressed and trying to get DLA, well i have filled in the forms for DLA and am waiting to hear from them, I am type 2 Diabetic and have many problems, bad knees, Carpol Tunnel in both hands and depresive on times.
I have recently had blood tests done and i have been informed by my nurse and Doctor that i am B12 deficient too as i am vegetarian and dont eat dairy products because i dont like them at all.
I have so much going on at the moment i am living day by day this B12 has shocked me badly and looking in to the condition on the net is frightening i am 42 and feel so unfit but i keep going, i like to swim some times if i can find the enegy anyway thats my moan over with how are all of you ok i hope and a huge thank you to every one that gave advice when i was here a few months ago. :D

Hello again Helen

Sorry to hear about your vit b12 deficiency, are you getting injections for this now? It is possible that a lot of your pains, incl tingling and carpal tunnel syndrome are due to this deficiency so hopefully you are going to feel better really soon and your depression will lift as you get healthier once more.

What are your bg readings like, what is your diet like? I know you said that you are vegetarian, so am I although I have recently started to eat fish again.

Fingers crossed that you do get some DLA, although in my experience a first application is always refused, seems to be standard practice nowadays, goodness knows why, if this happens appeal against the decision - if you do need any advice on DLA contact the CAB or you can send me a PM if you like and I will give you some pointers.

All the best

Karen

Thanks Karen yes i am getting the vb12 injections i have had 5 within 2 weeks, and now once every three months.
I am still waiting to hear about the DLA my diet is mainly veg fruit but i am a sod for chocolate, i must cut it down my BS are anything from 12 to 5.8 in the mornings depends if i have been naughty i also need to get walking i am losing the weight slowly and feeling a lot better at the moment. :)

have you taken a look at the forum regarding low-carbing? it is VERY acceptable upon a vegetarian diet, even vegans can do it - a little light googling will give you nutritional advice on best food sources of b12 to supplement your injections.

I'm a veggie too (have been for over 20 years) and diabetic for just 6 weeks ... in the six weeks since I (thank gods) found this forum, I have gone from a snivelling falling asleep at the wheel suffering bouts of insomnia and downturns in my mental state person - to a brighter, upbeat, energetic "well-feeling" person ... because I cut out all those "supposedly healthy" carbs, such as brown rice, whole pasta and bread and baked postatoes and the such ... I'm so impassioned about my new life (I won't call it a diet, because have ths for the rest of my life) that I would strongly recommend you consider it ...

b12 deficiency can make you depressive in and of itself ... although the injections "should" sort you out, there's nothing like a natural diet of foods rich in the right nutrients. I eat broccoli 5 times a week ;) it is a superfood for sure :)

good luck and NEVER give up, because with a few tweaks (which might seem restrictive to begin with) you CAN feel so much better. J/xxx

Agreed, mother is B12 deficient due to malabsorbtion following surgeries on her gut, the injections sort her out.

Carpal tunnel and frozen shoulder are common in diabetics, the tingling could be peripheral neuropathy and the depression may be connected to neuroendocrine levels, all of which may improve with tighter BG control.

It can't be easy being vegetarian and diabetic, can you force yourself to eat fish? The Omega 3 oils and bioflavinoids are beneficial.

Failing that, flaxseed oil may help with the Omega 3s. And have you tried sprouting grains and seeds? An Indian diabetic I know does that, it greatly reduces their carb impact and produces various proteins.

These guys are mostly good news

You poor thing, you sound very down. I have lots of other problems apart from the diabetes and I understand how some days the whole seems very overwhelming. But keep at it, you wil get there. One thing I will say, despite having had my bowel removed, arthritis, asthma, diabetes, diabetic neuropathy, high blood pressure and gout, I was turned down for DLA not once, but twice. I was so incensed as I know someone who was granted it for a "bad back" which I know was painful, but not too debilatating as he carried on with his usual day to day life with few problems. I was also suffering very bad side effects from immuno suppressants which meant I was frequently unable to change my stoma bad and had to enlist the help of my husband - the whole thing was and still is, a nightmare. In the end, I finally decided enough was enough and I asked to go to a tribunal and was granted the highest care component and highest mobility component (I spend a large amount of time in a wheelchair). I think what swung it in the end were letters from my stoma nurse, surgeon and gastroenterologist. Gather as much written support from your doctors/consultants as you can muster but still be prepared for a fight. Don't give in! They are very relucant to award DLA as in many cases recipients rarely improve to a large degree so the benefit is a long term award. Keep fighting Helen!

If it offers any hope, back in March/April I started getting awful joint and muscle pains over my whole body. I was tested for Rheumatoid Arthritis and a host of other things. It turned out to be a Vitamin D deficiency. I have an injection about 8 weeks ago now and am starting to feel the benefits now and feel much better in myself. I hope the same came be said for you in a few weeks.

Kind regards,

Jackie

Thank you every one again i am at the moment waiting for the appeal with DLA, I have had all my injections now of B12 but i don't feel any different i feel fine, I had my diabetes check up at the hospital yesterday to see the nurse, she said she would like my bloods to be around 5/6 in the morning reading, they are mostly but on times 17 if i have had a late banana or chocolate
At the hospital visit yesterday the nurse looked at my readings and she said she is going to see the hospital DR and ringing me on thurs 30 oct as she is recomending me coming off insulin and going to put farward that i have injections to stop my appitite and i will lose weight,i have to inject an hour before food then 6 hours after that, that's all i know for now can't remember the name of it but will keep you all updated :) I am feeling down at the moment as i started to do so well but i get very bad depression and i feel that i should forget the DLA if they think i am pulling a fast one and go back to work, but who will employ me i have had so many appointments in the last month between my GP and hospital plus i know i am no where near fit enough to work and my mind is not clear,i used to feel so alive i used to be out with my mates on the weekends and loved live gigs and follow a certain rock band up and down the country .
Now i rarely go out as i am in constant pain my hands are numb or in pain my knees hurt bad i dont drink any more as that makes me ill i have the odd glass of lager,i know i sound down and sad but i am so thankful i have brilliant children my daughter helps in every way my son also if it wasnt for them well i darnt say it but i feel i wouldnt be here :(

Thanks to all i will update things thursday !! :)
