Hello ,my daughter in law has just been diagnosed with Diabetes in her 26th week gestation of pregnancy . My son died in Febuary,so along with her Mum (who is Type 2 diabetic and this runs in her family ) ,we are trying to keep her spirits up after my sons death and thro out her pregnancy . I was an "old nurse and midwife " ,but have not worked for many years and things change . I shall be in theatre with her when she has the baby in August as "birth partner . An elective C Section was arranged because of the difficulties in pregnancy last time . At the moment she has been advised to watch her diet and carbs closely .
I just need more up to date information and a bit of moral support in how to help L , as an obviously worried mum in law,and grandma . Thank you for reading this .

oh goodness... that must be hard going for the whole family. It sounds like your daughter in law's mum probably would have up-to-date information if she has type 2 herself?? I personally don't have experience with gestational diabetes... but I've colleagues who had it when pregnant within the last year and the advice they've been given is pretty much the same advice given to type 2's.... watch your diet, exercise, reduce carb portions and eat quality carbs if you do. I guess the main concern is also hypertension during pregnancy as my endo has always explained to me that hormones play a part in controlling your blood pressure, sugar levels, and cholesterol. One thing that is probably good to do is encourage her to test her BGLs often to make sure she's ok. From a diabetic perspective it's not easy and having people hound you about things isn't the best either. Gentle encouragement now and then is ok. I hope all goes well with the pregnancy. :D

Welcome Nikkity

like mep I've no experience of gestational diabetes but there are many many people on here who have, they will be along soon.

Your D-I-L is lucky to have support from you and her mum. Have a good read through the forum and ask plenty of questions

Thank you both meb73 and Maryj , yes this is a very good forum . Thanks for advice , its the support to support thats so important .
Yes her Mum is very good dietary wise , shes very sensible with her own diet . No we will not nag , (I know what Im like when told I cant do something because of spinal issues ! :) ) .Its just that with loosing my son so suddenly and unexpectedly and L her husband at 10 weeks gestation , the thought of anything going badly wrong with her or God forbid the unborn baby ....well its just too much to contemplate for her and us . He was a much loved son in law also . Our 3 year old grandaughter is so confused as to where Daddy is .....well you can imagine the emotions going around .
