Hello I'm a very new diabetic! I was told I'm likely to be a type one due to my symptoms and my levels have been very high (I was up to 29) tonight in a 17.4 but having seen a diabetic nurse today she thinks I'm type 2!
I obviously need an antibody test to confirm all but now I've been told I will be on insulin injections AND tablets as from Monday.
Has anyone else had experience with doing both and why? It's not really been explained! Any help is much appreciated!

Hi. Well your in the right place, loads of 1st hand knowledge here & friendly.
With levels like that what would be your typical days eating?.

Hi I have been eating healthy for a while so a typical day has been shredded wheat (2) with banana then soup for lunch and evening meal of meat and veg xx

Welcome :)
No wonder you are confused ! Who initially thought you are likely to be Type 1 ? And was the nurse you saw the practice nurse at your surgery ? Or a Diabetic Specialist Nurse at a hospital diabetes clinic ?

It's highly unusual for someone newly diagnosed to be put on insulin AND medication for diabetes, so I'm wondering if they mean insulin and a statin for cholesterol, as it's all to common to prescribe these for diabetics, whether they need them or not

There is an unfortunate tendency for HCP's to assume an adult is Type 2 based on nothing more than their age - the myth that Type 1 only occurs in children and teenagers is a hard one to shift. You are right to think an antibody test is called for to establish what you actually are , but I think that if your initial diagnosis of Type 1 was made by a doctor or consultant, based on your symptoms, that is probably the type you are.

Bad news 1st shreddies high carb, banana high carb, soup most likely if tinned high carb, meat & veg ok depending on type of veg, spuds high carb. This could be why the high readings. It's crazy they tell what is healthy for us but if it is carb laiden it's not.

Today I saw I diabetic nurse. She basically made be feel that as I'm over weight I must have type 2. But my doctors have said my symptoms suggest type 1.
She said I will be in tablets and insulin from Monday as she thinks When I have the antibody test I will be type 2. But it wasn't explain why or even if it's okay to be on both!

Thank you so much for letting me know that I shall alter what I'm eating to that and see if it helps my readings tomorrow

There will be a difference but it does take a little time but try bacon & egg for breaky, chuck any starchy veg you have in the bin & go green. Full fat yogurt at lunch maybe to get the ball rolling till you get to know more. Small steps work best.

Keep it under your hat when talking to the Dr/nurse until your levels are down & they tell you your doing well, they think they know best but they aren't the ones that live with every day. Even the founder of the X-pert health charity does lchf & is change the way of teaching others that advice on treating the condition, but that will take some time before we see it. She has written a very good & informative book on it, available here, http://www.xperthealth.org.uk/shop/details/p/handbook-lowcarb-highfat-lifestyle

Times they is a changing you must have seen on tv recently about eggs & fats that when they told us they were bad they had now hard evidance to back it, but people have believed for all those yrs.

So much to take in and I feel even more through now the nurse said she thinks i am type 2 and not type 1!

Whichever type you are doesn't really matter at the moment. You are diabetic with high levels, and the same diet is appropriate for everyone. All carbs convert to sugar (glucose) once inside the system. Sugar in the system is what we don't want and what our bodies can't cope with. The more carbs you eat, the higher your levels will be, and the more insulin you will need, it is that simple.

Have a good read round the forum and ask as many questions as you like.

Thank you that's kind x
Yes that's how I've been viewing it but just wondered why I'm now going to be on both insulin and tablets? And what effect that has? It hasn't really been explained!
