I am new to registering here, although have browsed through the forum before.

I am 49 and I was diagnosed with Type 2 in October 2007. I am on 3 x 850mg Metformin per day and try to restrict the amount of carbs I eat.

I have found it a quite difficult thing to come to terms with and after a difficult period earlier in the year when my fasting BG was up in the 9 - 12 mark, I have had my medication changed and now my fasting BG is now around the 7.2.

I also have IBS-D and was put on Amitriptyline for this, it sorted out my stomach, but it made me put on weight and sent my BG much higher, so I stopped taking it, but I got neuropathy in my toes which the Amitriptyline seemed to be covering up. At the same time as I was taking the Amitriptyline, I was also taking Fluoxetine (Prozac) for depression, this also seemed to send my BG higher. I'm now taking Citalopram for the depression and it also helps with the neuropathy and has brought down my BG levels, but my stomach seems to have a mind of its own, but it isn't as bad as it was before the Amitriptyline.

I have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - is this related to the Diabetes? I have Dupuytren's cords in both hands, but no bending of my fingers.

I have only ever seen my GP or practice nurse about my diabetes. My GP will prescribe testing strips but only three boxes of 50 per year, so to test as often as I want to I have to buy my own. He also does my annual review just after Christmas - I think this is so mean :(

Is it normal not to see a consultant when you have T2? I would have liked to have seen one at least once.

Sorry about the essay and I probably should ask my questions elsewhere.

Hi Denise,

A warm welcome to the forum.
I do not think it unreasonable for you to ask for a referral to a Consultant as your health problems need the best approach with regard to treatment. Most G.P.'s do not have the expertise.
The test strip issue is a big one for Type 2's and seems to be a postcode lottery. Members here supplement their supply/non supply by buying them. If you let us know which ones, there may be someone here who can tell you where they are the cheapest.
Hope someone will be able to help with your queries.

Catherine.

Thanks for replying to my message Catherine. I feel like I've been left to my own devices to decide what is best for me, GPs are not specialists and I would like more input, so I will ask a few questions here.

Without my meter, I would never had realised that pizzas are a complete no for me, so I'm glad I got one but I think I should have had one right at the beginning. I use one touch ultra strips and buy my extras on ebay, but they are on my repeat prescription so I will order them more often and see if anything is said.
