Hi Roughy - welcome to the forum. I'm a relative newbie too - diagnosed about 6 weeks ago but since finding this forum and following all the expert and good advice have got my bg numbers down fairly quickly. I know there is loads to take in - but take one day at a time - this is what I am doing and although its fairly scary I take comfort from all the success stories out there.

I will only give you one piece of advice as a newbie myself and that is buy yourself a blood glucose meter and test yourself.

I test about 6/7 times a day at the moment so I can understand what I can and can't eat - it makes me feel in control of this condition and helps me understand how food can be either your friend or foe!

Good luck and welcome

Hi Roughy - It's good to meet you. No need to be scared as long as you take care of yourself and start managing your situation. Do not sit back and expect the medication to sort everything out. I was diagnosed Type 2 nearly nine years ago and I haven't any problems whatsoever that I am aware about. Moreover, I've just learnt loads that I wish I'd known earlier.

Want to tell us a little more about your diagnosis?

Best Wishes - John

Hi, im in the same boat as yourself newly diagnosed and to be honest struggling, on tablets and doing self testing 2-3 times per day. My problem is my weight, I thought that by following a healthy diet I would start to lose weight but I haven't ive actually gained half a stone in two weeks. Fluid retention seems to be a problem something I have never had before - just cant get to grips withit all. Has anyone else gained rather than lose weight, can I take diuretics to help with the fluid - really getting me down

Hi Bloated,

It depends what you mean by a healthy diet! The supposed healthy diet as it's currently defined is anything but healthy as far as diabetics are concerned. Nor for non-diabetics for that matter, but at least they can get away with it for longer.

Hello and welcome to the forum

No, no dont get depressed, these things can be sorted, you know I dare say all of us felt like you do at the moment, in the beginning you are just so confused, worried, and experience just about every emotion there is. But it will get better I promise.

You made a good move already by coming here, you will find everyone is so caring and friendly and will be trying their best to help you. Its also so good to hear that you have started testing, this way you will learn how the different food affects you and so you will find out whether you need to reduce or cut out certain foods altogether. I would advise you to get hold of Collins Gem carb counting booklet, to start reading food labels for carb content and also get hold of Dr Charles Clark book The Diabetes Revolution, its very easy to read, there are some other really good books but it takes a while to get stuck into them, so probably best wait till you are more familiar with the whole issue of diabetes. Do not worry, you can live a perfectly healthy life as a diabetic, you can avoid developing complications, they key to this is basically that you achieve non diabetic bg levels, exercise, relaxation and what you eat. Read around the forum, but dont try to do too much in one go, there is so much info around and you want to avoid information overload.
First can you tell us what medication you are taking, what you are eating and what your readings are like?

All the best

Karen
