Well, not a noob diabetic, a noob to the forum.

A little bit about me.

Classic symptoms around 8 years ago. Constant thirst, constant peeing, yadda yadda. Started on Humalog x2 a day (can't even remember the units). Utter rubbish. Ended up on Novorapid (units depending on meal size but very rarely more than 12u and Lantus 32u). Still battling with blood sugars due to a chaotic lifestyle. Usually pretty good but have the odd "14.4.....***???" moment and of course the obligatory hypo now and again but perfect warning signs. I'm uber active and a keen mountain biker. Had one reading of 1.4 after a long ride but felt totally fine!

I'm 32, married, eat healthily (with the odd fry up perhaps once or twice a month).

Currently a smoker (I know.... I'm hopeless at quitting) And started on Champix today, and was also put onto Simvastatin today too as "it's law" apparently. (Not ACTUAL law) as my bad cholesterol was something like 5.2.

HbA1c was 8.1 last time but I'm aiming for sub 7. I know my control will be a lot tighter once the smokes dissapear and the champix kick in.

Currently completing my psychiatric nurse training and finish in March.

Think thats enough rambling for now!

Oh, it's Mark btw. Hi all!

Welcome to the forum Mark, a psych nurse,I think we could do with you on here!!  :lol:Have a good read round the forum and you will find plenty of info to help you reduce to below 7. Ask us questions, there's always someone with the answers.

Thanks for the welcome.

Due to me chosen career I'm an information freak. It only dawned on me last night when my usual (three) mountain bike forums were boring me, that i could be on a diabetic forum and that might be actually useful to me!

Interesting to see all the comments on Simvastatin. Let's see how it goes for me eh? Just had my first about an hour ago - 40mg. If I get any problems I'll just use a pill cutter and try me at 20mg.

Also interested in meal ideas - currently my fave meal is veg stir fry with a half handful of fine noodles - seems to work for me.

Currently re-reading Dr Bernstein's book. Makes sense. What does the general consensus feel?

(I can see my post count rocketing!!!)

Dr Bernstein is a favourite on here with the ones who follow a low carb diet.\You will find lots of different arguments for and against low carbing on here!!!

Well one thing I will say... There is no one perfect treatment. What's right for one person will not be so good for another.

Looking forward to joining in some debates and discussions!

Anyway, I have to drive to Brum to pick the missus up. Oh fun..... :)

ciao all.

Hya Mark,
Welcome to the forum,hope u find it useful,have a good weekend :D

Hi aphex
With BGs of 7.1 and 7.6, you should be able to get that down to non-diabetic with die alone. YOU WILL NOT if you follow thw "eat plenty of complex carb" advice that's often dished out. Cut sugar completely( wherever it's hiding,) and severly reduce starches and you'll do it and if you can keep in the non-diabetic range of around 5 at all times, you may well even prevent the condition progressing. Most doctors are convinced that T2 diabetes is inevitably progressive and that you can't avoid complications. It's up to people like us to prove them wrong.

Thats all well and good Hanadr.... But I'm type 1 and have been for 8 years, and I can't see anywhere I mentioned having BG's of 7.1 and 7.6.

Have you replied to the right person?

im currently reading Berstiens book on diet, seen my dsn thursday who told me 2 discard wotever is in the book & continue with the complex carb stuff.

any advice???????/

Watch out with the Chantix, we have had several reports of it actually *inducing* diabetes on the ADA forum, probably Type 2 ie. insulin resistance. Also it can induce depression but I guess you will be able to spot that happening!

Bernstein is an excellent source of information even if you decide his protocols are too ascetic.

There's some excellent information for insulin users here
