Hello, I didn't intend to join the forum - only to get the fact sheets from the website, but it wouldn't allow me to do that without joining up (I know, it says it will - but it wouldn't). Anyway I threw in a silly name and now that I have started browsing the forum after all, I guess I'm stuck with it :/
Whenever I get blood tests done I am told they are fine, no worries. The only one I seem to have a copy of is 18 months ago, fasting insulin at 9mIU/L with 1-12 being normal range.
Clue number 1 is a doc who did a glucose tolerance test with insulin levels maybe 10 years ago, blood sugar levels were fine but insulin levels still going up by the end of the test. She diagnosed me as insulin resistant and told me to find a dietician. I have been more or less low carb since then.
Clue number 2: This is my big concern right now - for about the last year, I have found myself experiencing a reaction after some meals, either lunch or afternoon snacking (not at other times), and maybe 2 or 3 times a week. I feel dizzy, lightheaded, sleepy within maybe half an hour of eating and it takes a couple of hours to get over it. So far my doc is not concerned - but I am, I dare not eat out if I am driving in case I can't get home!
Clue number 3: I recently spent a week in hospital, mostly fasting as they kept hoping to fit me in for surgery then finding they couldn't after all, day after day... I had a couple of light breakfasts, but only carbs were on offer, not the way I would normally eat at all, and boy I felt bad after each of those. In general though, while fasting, I felt amazingly good compared to normal, with none of the fluctuations in body temps that I normally have (and find very frustrating).
Clue number 4: I know that if I eat carbs with my evening meal I will have a sweaty night - if I just eat meat and veg (as I usually do) I won't be sweaty at all. I have less issue with carbs at other times, and I seem to have a particular problem with rice so that I generally avoid it.
I am English/Australian now living in Adelaide. At 52, I have had 20 years of chronic fatigue (now resolving due to finding an amazing doc on that front) and also have issues with hormone balance, thyroid, liver function, mercury (amalgam) toxicity, food intolerances, etc etc. It is treating these that has helped no end in relieving the cfs. I am not exactly overweight at 10st 8lbs but I would still like to lose a few of those pounds. Due to the cfs I have been very sedentary, especially the last 3 years when things got really bad, but now I find I am able to cope with more movement and even a short walk, so I imagine lack of exercise has played a part in this too.
I have recently been given a blood glucose meter and I'm just awaiting arrival of test strips in the hopes it will help me unravel some of this. I hope to have enough info for my next doc appointment to get some help - but in the meantime I would love any thoughts from the folk on here. Of course it could be nothing to do with blood sugars/insulin resistance, but I have already considered food intolerance and note that it is a wide variety of different foods/meals that cause the dizziness, all of which are foods that I eat quite happily at other times. Sorry this is all a bit long now I look back on it...
