Hello all.

I am new diabetes and to this forum. I was diagnosed as Type 2 just after Easter. I am 36 this coming Monday and I am about 19 and a half stone ( so lots of weight to lose). I am on a lot of medication for depression and for the last year or so I felt that I was on a self destructive mode and knew that I would eventually hit a brick wall!

I hit it at Easter and spent about a week in hospital. They put me on Diamicron Mr30mg, Glucophage 850mg 3 times a day, Ramilo, Aspirin and Lipitor. My Blood sugars still range from 5 to 8 depending on time of day. I have been doing my best to follow my dietitians instructions and it is quite hard as even just after homemade carrot and Butternut squash soup my sugars went up to 8.

I am so glad to have found this forum and hope to find the support and much needed information from others here and in turn help others. I want to learn as much as I can about type two to improve my health and quality of life.

Hello MotherBear and welcome. :)

It sounds as if you have been given meter and testing strips and are self testing so that is brilliant! :D
Have you noticed what sends your BG levels upwards? It may help you to keep a food diary and note against the meals eaten the test results before eating and then 2 hours afterwards. This will help you to work out what is safe for you to eat and what you need to cut down or cut out. 8)

Yes I have a testing kit. I check about 3 to 4 times a day. I seem to be sensitive to some vegetables like carrots. :( I am very new to this so I am sure it will take me a while to get used to what to eat. I have started to make my own foods more or less from scratch so I am hoping that it will help. :)

Cooking from scratch certainly helps as you know exactly what is in your food. You may find that a Collins gem Carb Counter book (£3.99) or similar book will help you to work out the best foods.

I find that most roots shoot my BG levels up and I read somewhere that above the ground veggies (particularly green and leafy) are safer for diabetes. It does take time to get your head round it but it is worth the efforts. 8)

Many Happy Returns to You.
I have read that both carrots and parsnips are high sugar wise and beets too. I like Suma's vegan pea but perhaps you could try and make your own version, using peas, broad beans, etc. I am finding my way around carb foods too and have just ordered the Gem guide from Amazon for £3.03.
Good luck with your weight loss. I have a few stone to loose and have started with somehow getting rid of 6 kgs. I think once you start lowering the carbs and saturated fat content the weight may come off.
Are you keeping a food diary? I started this between my blood tests for diagnosis and really find it useful. I also note down medication times and any unusual symptoms. Can give feedback to my GP.

Welcome MB.
I find this forum the most useful tool in managing my diabetes. Since finding that low carb works for me I have been reborn! Not only have pains gone but my depression has lifted, I love life and suicidal thoughts are no more. My diet was the only thing I changed. I am however aware that one size does not fit all. So see how you get on with a new diet and don't forget exercise as well. M

So good to hear that you are feeling so good! Well done you for working through it all! 8) :D
