Hello Flak,Hi there, I have come to this site because I have been diagnosed as pre-diabetic Hba1C reading of 44 mmo/l on the 6th March 2019. I had a previous test in September of last year which was normal. For the last four weeks I have been doing the Dr Michael Mosely fast 800 Blood sugar diet. In that time I have lost 1St 5lbs, my blood pressure this morning was 109/70 and my Blood glucose readings are averaging out at 5.4 mmo/l after 84 tests over the last month.
I'm hoping by joining these forums I can gain more knowledge of this condition and can usefully contribute to the debate.
What do you all do when you go on holiday? I have a 23 night cruise to Australia booked in Feb next year and I am wondering how I am going to get on monitoring my carb intake when all my meals will be prepared for me?
Hi Flak, well done so far. I'm not an expert as I was only diagnosed just over a year ago and it's a steep learning curb. But by reading many posts on this forum, I would assume that pre-diabetes is showing you are beginning to have some insulin resistance and if you were to carry on would become fully diabetic, but how long that would take, who knows! You are able to reverse pre-diabetes but as for the long haul I don't know if by resuming your original diet you would then become pre-diabetic and then diabetic. I know that you can reverse type 2 diabetes if you remain low carb and I think that hopefully you will improve insulin resistance which might result in you being able to increase carbs, although I prefer to think of the diet as a life change as opposed to a diet which says to me that once you have it under control, you can then eat what you want and never have to worry. If only!! Will you be getting another HBA1C test to confirm normal levels? Hopefully someone will be able to advise you about diet once you have been pre-diabetic. They are a great bunch on here. One question which does occur to me is I am told it is possible to reverse this diagnosis and regain a normal BG level, Does that mean that the condition has gone or is just in remission? Will I have to continue to eat a low carb diet and monitor my BG levels for the rest of my life?
That sounds absolutely wonderful! It is a long time off - by then you will know automatically what you can and can't eat, and be able to judge portion sizes on the plate. The menu choices on cruise ships are vast. Lucky person!!

Hi and welcome to team D.
but i'd say do as i did, try a little of what you fancy ..
test as you do here.
it might be a no..or it might be the same as me..good to go ..(for a short while at least)
Good luck until then.
regards.

a little bit of what you fancy does you good now and then.....no-one here will send the sugar nazi's around if you relax a bitThanks, and that is very encouraging information! I will follow to the letter this WOE for as long as it takes, i'm a bit OCD anyway and once I embark on a course of action I see it through come what may. But this holiday has been a long while in the planning and it is encouraging to think that I may for a short period be able to relax the regime just a little bit!
Hi and welcome to team D.
I believe it is a case of not going back to how you used to eat on a daily basis.
so remission rather then cure, though others do make a persuasive argument for cure..
i think its all very much semantics... and how we personally see the 'evidence'
as for the cruise, it is along way off, and by then you should, as mentioned have a much better idea of the foods YOU can handle well and those you should perhaps avoid.
having said that..i recently spent time in india and with the curries rice and breads, was a little concerned about how i would fare.
I have been LCHF since nov, after dipping a toe in and finding it helpful i then proceeded to follow others in this WOE.
(probably run at 40/60 grams a day of carbs..just to frame the next part )
On arrival in india i tested regularly the first week with the intention of relaxing my diet as ..well i was on HOLIDAY.
However , i found that the spikes i was expecting never really came.
I ate minimal rice, but did eat many bread types/flours, nan, roti, plain breads handmade on premises, samosas, etc
i also drank beers/vodka daily..(been tea total pretty much since DX)
The best i could make out is .
* foods here are much more processed then there
* the months i spent low carbing have depleted my 'sugar bowl' allowing me the luxury of refilling without too much issue
* The flours/ingredients there aren't so adulterated by the pesticides and chemicals we use over here in the west.
i imagine it is probably a combo of them all.
i did feel quite blessed and lucky that i could step out of this LOW CARB skin for a few weeks.
I enjoy eating this way at home, but in a foreign country where things don't fall so easily to hand about carb content etc, did worry me, so like i say blessed it all seemed to work out well for me.
Ship side, sure much will be processed to 'keep' better but maybe not too much.
fresh foods, much like you eat at home will be available, but i'd say do as i did, try a little of what you fancy ..
test as you do here.

Good luck until then.
