Hi,

My name is tracy and I have been insulin dependant for 3.5 years. Before this I was just on metformin.

I have polycystic ovary syndrome which my dr. belives started my road to insulin.

I realise Im new to the forum but I am looking for some help and support. I do not always comply with taking my meds though I always take my night time insulin levimer. I lead a busy life as a student veterinary nurse so eat on my feet and just as I think to take my insulin something will happen and I push it to oneside to help out.

At this moment in time my kidneys are fine but my diabetes nurse has told me I have about two years before they will fail and I will need dialysis.
I am rather fond of my kidneys and want to stop this from happening (also suffering from deppression which does not help with the meds compliance) and I know I need help but my gp isnt helpfull at all.

my current meds are
novorapid 1 unit per 10grams carbs
levimer 25 units
metformin 1gram twice daily
10mg prednisolone (auto immune disease) once daily.

I manage my levimer, 1g metformin once daily and the preds but forget or lose track of when I should have taken my novorapid so dependant on what i have eaten for dinner can take 10 -20 units at bed time.

my last HBa1c was 11.2 but due to the preds this will now be higher.

Please if any of you good people can help me please please contact me I dont want to be dead by the time im 40 (im 32 at the mo)

Many thanks in advance

Hi Tracy and welcome to the forum. :)

I can't help you with the medication side of things as I am not familiar with any of it.

All I have to share is experience and I know that if you don't look after yourself no-one else will! Your health comes first so that you can then function properly to help others, that is why in aircraft they tell you to get your own oxygen mask on first before helping anyone else. You do not get medals for putting yourself in jeopardy to leap to the assistance of others and, deep down, I can see from what you have written here you already know that. :)

Look after yourself, please :!: 8)

Hi Tracey and welcome! :)

A hba1c of 11.2 is way to high. As you already know, it is time to start taking your diabetes more seriously to avoid future complications. In order to bring this figure down you must remember to use your novo when eating your main meals, without this insulin your levels will be running dangerously high, and your kidneys will start producing ketones, which can lead to ketoacidosis.

Look in the type 1 section of the forum for previous posts and advice, or use the search facility at the top right hand side. By coming to the forum you have taken the first step towards addressing your problem and concerns, we may offer you advice etc, but it is down to you to manage and control your diabetes. Please feel free to post when you are ready.

hya tracey and welcome,
basically the only way to avoid the complications is to get your bloods under control, you need to set meal times at work where u eat and inject for starters, any other questions u have please ask the forum as everyone is here to help you :D

Thanks every one for the warm welcome.

I started today with bg 11.4 at breakfast,
b4 lunch I was down to 6.8
2 hours later I was at 7.4
b4 dinner 8.4
still got to do one more test but basically I have proved to myself that If i work at it I can get my bg under control.

early days yet but with my support team and this forum I hope to get my HBa1c down to single figures.

Tracy
