Hello!

Hi everyone. I've joined up today for info more than anything. I'm not diagnosed diabetic. I recently had a well woman check- up now I'm 46 and after a fasting test my glucose registered 4.8 which I know is in the healthy range. However I've noticed a recent change in my reaction to sugars. If I over indulge in things like biscuits (I know -before you say it!) then I begin to feel strange. About a fortnight ago I had a very small slither of my partner's wheat free chocolate brownie birthday cake, almost immediately went light headed, a bit woozy and felt like my blood was draining out of me. It worried me enough to make a doctors appointment (this weekend) but I'm just after reassurance more than anything in case it's the onset of diabetes. So - hello and any views or advice gratefully received - apart from the "don't overindulge" which I already know! Thanks x

Hello!

I'm not diagnosed either BUT I started off with normal numbers (my grandma monitored my BG as she is diabetic) and started feeling very very strange after eating carbs/sugar a while ago. Now I see numbers up to 19. But I started out with fasting number of 4.2! My diabetic friend said he started out with reactive hypos and feeling unwell after meals before his diagnosis too. It could be your BG shooting high immediately after food though and/or a crash into lows following the meal.

So you see, things can change! And feeling odd after meals is a warning sign that something isn't right, high or low or whatever it may be.

It could be postprandial hypotension or another problem but it's worth getting checked out.

I can't because I'm too young to be tested (I've actually privately requested test from a lab myself after GP refused...) but you are at an age that is considered at risk and should definitely go get some tests done. Catch anything NOW before it gets worse

And I know it's a crummy feeling. Half way through a bar of chocolate and it feels like someone slipped you some pills @_@

Good luck, GET CHECKED OUT OK <3 XXXXXX

Hi again. I had my fasting test only a couple of months ago. The only result that I was contacted about was my cholesterol was slightly over - something that a healthier diet would fix (I'm with Slimming World so am bringing my weight down steadily). I don't always feel dizzy or drained but it was the extreme reaction to the brownie that worried me. I'm also constantly tired, I think my vision has changed as I am constantly taking my varifocals off for close up work (defeats the object really) plus more often than not I wake up with a slight headache that goes when I have my morning coffee. I don't have the classic thirst/peeing thing happening though, but I don't drink anywhere near what I should anyway. I may be jumping to big conclusions before I see the doctor but my mum who is 'old age' diabetic (she'd slap me for that comment!) said what I described sounded very familiar. I'm not normally a worrier when it comes to health and may well be putting 2 and 2 together and getting 36 but this one has me wondering! I guess I'll have a better idea on Saturday morning. Thanks so far. Sharon

Hey and welcome :-)

Is always best to err on the side of caution so well done for actually coming on here and asking questions! It may be that you have an allergy or an intolerance to certain foods like coeliac disease or something similar if you are reacting to Certain foods but also you may have impaired Glucose tolerance which is where your fasting results are non-diabetic but after eating you have issues? It would probably be worth investing in a meter and testing your blood after you eat these certain foods or when you feel poorly and if your levels are still fine then maybe discussing with your GP about food intolerances or suchlike. Hope this helps a little:-)

Diagnosed with GD in 2010, Completely disappeared postpartum. Re-diagnosed December 2012 with type 1.5 diabetes, age 26, BMI 23 currently controlled by only Metformin, 500mg twice a day.

Well I went to see the Saturday locus doctor and was completely dismissed. He didn't even ask me about symptoms just said there was no clinical evidence. However I am going for a 5day heart monitor check (that I think is a complete waste of time if I'm honest but I'll do it anyway) and I'm going to stay off the sweet stuff and keep an eye on how I feel. Not much else I can do at the mo.

I would say test and show your GP the results. That's how I got called in for a FBG and HbA1c. My fasting can be below 6.7 but after meals could be anywhere which may be the case with you. Testing will give you confirmation and evidence.
