Hi
I want my GP to refer me to a Consultant (cardiologist) so I can have a full check up and understand what damage I have done to my body.
I am 34 but have struggled with weight all my life. My BMI is 40 so very obese.
I was diagnosed with Type 2 in 2012. The doctor advised me to control my diet as my HbA1C has been not terrible (6.9% range ). My cholesterol is also high 5.15. Again GP did not advise any medication , and I was diagnosed with high blood pressure in 2006 for which I am been taking 2 tablets since 2006.

I am now realizing how much damage I have done to myself, I always thought that i would start the diet tomorrow etc so I have taken my health seriously.

I am now panicking about having a heart attack or stroke so I want to see a consultant and get all the tests done to understand how bad it is and perhaps take some sort of action. The GP won't refer me as he says he has no reason to do so. I have private medical insurance through work so i won't be burdening the NHS.

Can anyone advise how i could see a consultant or if they've gone through something similar. Would it be worth seeing a consultant.

Unfortunately, unless the gp has cause for concern and can't deal with matters themselves then they won't refer you to a cardiologist, there has to be a reason for a referral and the fear of having a heart attack or stroke isn't one I'd imagine, I'm afraid unless your suffering from symptoms ( for example angina). your gp is probably right in what they say.

Hiya im 37 not too overweight but I am on hbp tablets, have slightly high chol and also type 2. All my family are diabetics so it was a matter of time. Sounds like you are really stressing. You prob can change your lifestyle and really its up to your gp if you have a issue. I am allergic to high blood pressure tablets so can get to see a consultant on that basis. I suggest you ask for a referral to a diabetic nurse initially...I think your causing yourself undue stress.
