Good advice, thank you! I've ordered a testing kit, started a low carb diet, watched the first programme and I'm on my way..! Is it true, though, as I've seen somewhere on here, that no matter how well I control my BG, my pancreas will eventually start to fail and I will have to take medication?

I couldn't agree more @urbanracer

Hi Debrasue
You have come to the right place for help. I too am T2D. I was informed by my Dr over the phone that I was diabetic and I also had prostate problems. That was in Sept 2015. Since then I have had numerous hospital visits - Xrays, Bone scan. more CT scans and a miriad of consultations none of which related to the diabetes. I did get an appointment with the D/N in Nov 2015 and given several leaflets and advice and a blood test in April 2016. (Now awaiting results). More visits ahead regarding the prostate, but nothing about diabetes.
I have been scanning the internet for information (www.diabetes.co.uk) where I received much information.
I have now started a short course with Copenhagan University on the Physiology of Diabetes. If you want info you have to search for it.
You are here surrounded with like minded people, so keep watching and learning, that way you will master it. (Maybe not cure it, but understanding helps a lot.)
I wish you luck Debrasue.

Hi @debrasue
Congratulations on ordering the meter. It will allow you to take control of your diabetes and help you to make informed decisions about which foods to eat and avoid. Once you get it make sure you post and ask questions if you are unsure.

When you say eliminate pasta, bread and rice, does that include wholemeal pasta and bread, and brown rice?

I would definitely limit the amount of Wholemeal pasta, bread and brown rice and when you have your meter you can measure the impact of these and any foods on your Blood Glucose Levels and make those decisions your self

There seems to be a lot of conflicting advice, though - I thought coffee was supposed to be good, for instance? I don't really drink alcohol and I don't like tea, so that's not going to be a problem. And that's excellent advice about controlling my lifestyle - I guess that's what got me into this mess in the first place!

I drink Coffee everyday and have done so whilst Low Carbing. In my case with no sugar(sweetner) and a dash of milk.

@debrasue - Hello again. If you go to the top of this page and click on Forums, then scroll down to FOOD and NUTRITION - there you will see: Low Carb Diet - Low Calorie Diet - Weight Loss Diet and others. A lot of members on this forum follow the LCHF = Low Carb High Fat Diet. Hope this is of some help.

Why is tea and coffee bad? I'm T2 diet controlled with an hba1c of 36 and drink several cups of both tea and coffee with whole milk per day.
There is nothing wrong with tea and coffee if you don't put sugar in it.

Possibly but with a bit of care you can put that day off until you are 150 or so.

Thanks, MikePea! I appreciate your advice and I hope you get sorted with your medical issues and can start to feel the sunshine again!

Thanks muzza3 - that's very helpful!
