Hi guys I've been offered a place on a course and I'm happy about that my only concern is I was explaining to the very nice woman about my abcess's that refuses to heal properly and others that keep popping up. And she asked my diet and said one I don't eat enough and to I need carbs and starch as my body is fighting against me and not healing... Help confused muchly
 
What's your bg control like, your more prone to abscesses and infections if diabetes is uncontrolled, If it's OK then I'd discuss with your GP and ask if he would do some blood tests.
 
Hi I do have anti biotics from the gp and they are aware however all they say is its my diabeties and to take metformin. I'm not sure what my bg control is like as I have to start testing . I'm doing low carb and I've lost 21lb in 5 wks .I'm doing everything I can to get on top of situation.I'm just so confused as to what I'm doing wrong
 
I think you need to test your bg just to be sure that your diabetes is on track, it's difficult if your gp won't prescribe test strips as funding them yourself can be costly, there's a meter on the market called the SD Codefree(?) which has the cheapest test strips on the market. Well done on the weight loss btw


edit, just seen on another thread that you were only diagnosed in December and had the abscesses before this time, as I said earlier perhaps once your bg stabilises the abscesses may disappear, in the mean-time I'd keep taking the antibiotics and try and monitor your bg levels.

I've bought a little accu chek little machine I'm just going to get my husband to set it up as I'm to be blunt useless with setting stuff up. I will test and see what I'm doing wrong .
 
Have just tested and it was 9.3 I'm thinking this is quite high..now I just have to find out what I'm doing wrong.

It is high, although as your fighting a bacterial infection (abscesses) this may explain the higher bg readings, in times of illness it's quite common for diabetics to see elevated bg levels, either that or you may need your meds adjusted, best speaking with your diabetes care team.
 
Thank you I will try to get a drs apointment as I don't have a diabetic care team as of yet. They have started me on 500mg metformin but only on day 6 they didn't mention increasing it .thank you for replying have just realised I didn't wait two hours after ryvita and ham..would this make a difference at all..it was about an hour and half I waited..

No problem, whilst your there ask if you can have some test strips on prescription until such times that your bg levels settle, you never know they might leave them on
 
Hi I did ask already and was told oh we don't do any of that testing. We will do you once every 3months. She also said testing is for type 1 only . We are moving house on tuesday and drs so I pray for a dr that cares and is more knowledgable on type 2 .these boards have so much info perhaps drs should read these . I will try at new drs for strips mind can only ask eh .
 
Hi. It sounds like you are taking the right approach so keep at it. The person who said you need more food/carbs to fight the infection is talking rubbish. You need a sensibly varied diet but with the carbs kept down. The meter will help you decide what level of carbs you can tolerate. As your weight settles down to a good area and the blood sugar stabilises then you should find you have less infection. The GP may increase the Metformin gradually up to 2000mg. This won't make a vast difference but it all helps. I had to buy my own meter and strips before I went onto insulin. I'm afraid it's the NHS saving money.
