Help...does my child have T1 diabetes?

Hello,

I would be really grateful for anyones assistance, please.

I have an 18 month old daughter that drinks an awful lot of liquid day in and day out. To the point that I am changing her nappy when I go to bed and she is still 'flooding' overnight. Now, this may be that I simply have a little guzzle-guts. Entirely possible, as I myself like a lot of liquid, always having a drink 'on the go'.

However.....I, myself, have Type 1 diabetes and was diagnosed at the age of 7 (quite a few years ago now! ). It occurred to me that she may have diabetes, so being the concerned mommy that I am, and having obviously access to my own kit, I did a blood test on her this morning. It was 7.3 mmol. This was 90 minutes after a very large breakfast (she's going through a monster growth spurt), as we were about to shoot off out the door on the way to nursery/work.

I thought that 7.3mmol was perfectly acceptable after such a large breakfast, but guidance online suggests that this may still be on the high side.

Does anyone have any experience or advice to offer on this, please? If she is diabetic, she is diabetic, and we will deal with it. But having had T1 myself for best part of 30 years, not something I would wish on my child. Despite being level headed in everything in life, Im worrying a bit now!

Blood glucose levels in infants are quite erratic as I understand it.

I had the same concern with one of my sons and after speaking to a paediatric diabetes consultant they told me to test for glucose in the urine. You can buy glucose test strips from any larger chemist.

If there is glucose in your daughter's urine then you need to go straight to your GP as an emergency. This is because the sugar in her blood has gone above the renal threshold at which point the kidneys start trying to get rid of it; this is the classic symptom of diabetes.

However it is more than likely that she is fine; essentially the chance of your child being a Type 1 is only about 6-7% i.e a 93-94% chance that she is not.

I'm on a mobile at the moment but please search for posts by me about Vitamin D3 and babies; there is good evidence that giving a good dose of D3 reduces the chance of children developing Type 1. I give both my boys about 1,000 IU's a day.

I've got to say; the thing that annoys me most on this forum is where people like the OP ask a question which gets answered exactly as requested and the OP can't even be bothered to acknowledge that.

That is just rudeness and acts to dissuade people like me from posting.

This is community for exchanging information not some Customer Service Desk where you get to demand assistance...

Unfortunately that is the way things are sometimes and people don't come back and reply, however you should take some comfort that they might have read your post and acted upon it.

Were we all to be put-off by people not responding a lot of us would have given up a long time ago.
 
I didn't know its a duty to log in every day.
 
A forum is a strange thing - for someone my age, anyway, who couldn't even imagine the concept not that long ago. I'd like to know where some people have disappeared to, but I know I can't expect to find out!

If your post is essentially saying; I'm worried about my child can you help? I'd kind of expect you to have a look to see if anyone has replied wouldn't you?

It is possible to see a reply without logging on as you surely know.

You may not have the time or energy to to answer or may need time to think or possibly you are in a hospital with your very sick child or otherwise occupied. I have no problems at all with this. She will answer in her own good time.

I have so many other worries in my life and am extremely busy, in short, spend my energy on other things. I wouldn't call it goodness.

In an ideal world we would all remember to thank people but sometimes other things get in the way. It is evident from your post and your kind response to the op that this is an issue close to your heart and I think you should take comfort as noble head has pointed out that the op may have read your response but hasn't been able to reply.
 
Obviously we wouldn't want to speculate, but I think there are a number of possible reasons why the OP hasn't yet responded and none of them will be to do with just ignoring your helpful and practical post.
 
I can understand your frustration about not getting a response. As others have said the op might just be up to her eyes or her internet down or dealing with sick child. Take it from someone who has asked advice and received it that parents are very grateful for any help they receive. So on her behalf thank you

Except the OP has posted on a few other threads since Dillinger answered the question on this thread days ago.

I can understand why he is peed off . There is nowt as queer as folk.
