I think what you actually mean Hana is that you cannot control your blood sugars without this approach. This is not true for everyone else so please do not lump us all together. I have found that moderation is the key to my control.hanadr said:orchidlady
TYou've been fooled by the government's nonsense about "Healthy Diet". For diabetics, low fat/ high carb diets don't work and cereals are far from healthy.
I loathe porridge myself, but I cannot keep control of my blood glucose if i eat anything grain based. You hneed to eat a low carb/high fat diet to control blood sugar. That means wsomething like Atkins

orchidlady said:Morning all, so today I am really really low carbing to see if I can bring these levels down. Have had Scrambled eggs and Mushrooms this morning (yuk)and will test in a couple of hours to see the difference versus porridge. Probably a stupid question but if I eat anything for a snack should I then wait another 2 hours. I prefer to graze rather than eat big meals. Was thinking sugar free yoghurt or handful of nuts maybe a pear. Rubbish fasting reading of 16.1 this morning, had roast chicken, loads of green beans and brocolli, NO potatoes, not 1
orchidlady said:Thanks Xyzzy, I think you were one of people suggesting I give this go, how long realistically should one see a change if following a very low carb diet? You probably saw yesterday got to 21.4 yesterday and not eating anything crazy, so bit worried really

I spoke to my GP today and he has removed gliclazide from my meds as it is well under control now with 4 metformin and 1 sitaglitin  Before I was off the scale on the meter for 6 weeks. They actually thought I may be type 1. All my readings on the meter were mid to high 20's or off the scale entirely.joanne-77 said:cheers guys, the day i got tested(had gone in to see gp as i thought i had kidney infetion) my reading was 22.3 its levelled down to 10-15 which of course is still too high, see i was told bread was ok to have and to use brown rice but i just cant stand the taste & twxture of brown rice, and of cousre to have porridge for brekkie! on way to holiday we stopped off at mc`ds and i had a breakfast wrap and 2 hours after my reading was 8 the lowest its ever been! so maybe the porridge really isnt the best to havei will try the scrambled egg xxx

There are still medical issues that have not been addressed or diagnosed but at least my meds are now working. That with a low card diet and I am beating it
Like you I got all the **** about the healthy eating plate etc and asked my GP about it today and he agrees, it is utter tosh and the NHS is so slow to change it can actually be a danger. Our diabetes clinic still says carbs are fine in moderation. In my mind, I believe they are now speaking utter rubbish.

orchidlady said:Blimey Grace well done you, you seem to have things under control very quickly, is right you were only diagnosed in Aug 2012? Seems like most people have been put on Metformin since day 1 and with a lot lower levels than me. Maybe I am trying to tackle too much
orchidlady said:Morning all, had a virtual carb free day yesterday and 1 hour very strenous pilates class last night, was really expecting to see a change, just a a little would have been nice, was 16.1 this morning, will keep going though. On a positive note was really racking my brains about a low carb breakfast, just can not face meat, cheese or eggs. just had Greek yoghurt topped with warmed summer berries, yum and only 12 carbs. Only side effect I seem to have right now is my mood, very tearful (very unlike me)and irritable. Probably feeling sorry for myself, not get much RL support at the mo.
