help i need advice newly diagnosed with type 2

Hello to all

I found this website a few days ago and think that it s really helpful and you all sound so friendly :D
I was wondering if anyone has been in or is in a similar situation to me and would greatly appreciate some advice. I have been on prednisolone for over a year and a half and on azathioprine since march 08 for severe asthma and eczema, due to this I have just been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes and have been suffering with blurred vision, dry mouth and thirst along with tingling toes and fingers and sweating.
I was put on meformin 500mg twice daily and took my fist tablet with tea yesterday and within half a hour i had a bad allergic reaction to it and was covered in a rash and itchy lumps so at casualty they say i shouldn't have them again and today my doctor prescribed 1mg glimepiride. I am very wary to take them as im worried that this reaction may happen again is there anyone who is on this drug and know anything about it? I don't know about what to do and how to deal with type 2 diabetes and i am at my wits end :( would be great for some advice.
 
Hi and welcome! I am newly diagnosed type 2 also but luckily with no other complications, started Metformin yesterday too. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will come along soon!

Hi smithy1 and welcome to the forum.

Do you know what your blood sugar levels were when you were diagnosed? The GP's handbook for prescribing oral medication to treat type 2 diabetes says quite clearly that the first step on diagnosis is to restrict the intake of carbohydrates to see whether blood glucose levels can be normalised. Only after 3 months, if this is unsuccessful, should oral meds be prescribed. Even then, it should be in conjunction with carbohydrate restriction.

What does your typical day's diet look like?

Hi smithy1,welcome to the forum.I just looked up Glimepiride and you can get a reaction to it as well.You really need to talk to your doctor asap to find out if this will be likely!You do not say what your blood sugar levels are at the moment.Ask the doctor if there is any possibility of you trying to control it on diet only.If your blood sugars are really high then you will certainly need some form of medication to bring down your levels.

thank you for your reply :) my blood sugar on Thursday was 20.6 and last night at the casualty when I went with allergic reaction it was 11.6 and this morning it was 11.4 when the doctor checked it. I don't really understand blood suger readings, my sister is type 1 diabetic but hoe do doctors know which type you have? i find it all very confusing :lol:
I am wary to take the glimepiride after what happened yesterday with the metformin and ive been reading that if your on prednisolone you are at higher levels of hypoglycemia when taking diabetes medication. I am grateful for your reply and I like the picture of the cat :) hope to hear from you soon im glad I found this forum

Prednisolone is a steroid which can certainly make your blood sugars go up.Your blood sugars are high.Most diabetes like to keep their blood sugars below 7 if possible.If your sister is type 1 it may be worth asking your doctor to double check that you have not developed type 1 by asking for a C-Peptide test.

You really do need some form of medication to get your blood sugar levels down though.Please see your doctor as soon as possible to discuss what will be best for you.

I would concur with theother suggesions that you at least, try to keep your blood sugar down by diet. However your numbers a very high and it might not be possible.
It's possible that your reaction to medicine was to one of the inactive ingredients of the pills and that could happen with any other medicine and might not if you have a different brand or perhaps the Slow release form.
 
Prednisolone is notorious for putting up BG either temporarily or by inducing long term diabetes. Some authorities will use insulin to cover it for this reason. You really need some more competent medical advice IMO.

The glimepiride may well work but you will really need a BG meter and test

so you can balance diet and medication against the effect of the pred which may vary through the day and with dose

yes I was diagnosed officially on thursday but knew about my blood results about a week ago. :?

I think in so many ways I was very lucky since I had started a mega health kick before new year so I was in right frame of mind for all the compulsory changes ahead. But it is bl***y difficult though.

Hopefully you get your medication sorted soon!
