Hi,

I have just been diagnosed and not been to the diabetic nurse yet but is diabetes, type 2 curable ?

Hi,

I'm sorry to say it isn't curable as such, but it can be controlled by diet (and medication if necessary) to such an extent that your blood sugar levels come within the non-diabetic range. This doesn't mean you will be a non-diabetic. It means you will have to continue eating to the rules to stay there. If you stray too far, you will be back where you started. Some people say it is reversible, but only if you continue to control it.

Ok, thanks, not really what I needed but looks like I have to make sure I work hard to keep my diet as strict as I can get it.

And that will mean keeping carbohydrates low as they are effectively sugar. This may not be what the DN tells you so best be informed when you see her/him (does anyone have a male DN?).

Many on here benefit from LCHF in managing their diabetes, see www.dietdoctor.com/LCHF.

Did they prescribe you a test meter? Lucky if they did, but it is highly recommended you get one so that you can assess the impact of various foods on your blood sugar levels.

Welcome Janet by the way!

Welcome Janet.

The Newcastle Diet "reverses" Type 2 diabetes, but still requires an easier "maintainence" diet to keep blood sugars normal.

Hi, I have not been to see him yet as I have a very bad chest infection which I have been nursing since May cos they are **** doctors. I have not been out for 5 months as before then I was generally too unwell with my Fibromyalgia. So as for asking for a meter will be like asking for blood out of stone. As I have been reading how else am I going to learn what my levels are as I cannot go on me feeling unwell as a guide because it could be either of the other conditions I have so it is really important. However, as they have no idea how to manage my COPD and I do but refuse to give me what I need to recover in a matter of weeks instead of months I am going to go through hell with the diabetes as I don't have a clue. Many thanks for the support. Do you think it is worth taking up the offer on here for the free meter but pay either a certain amount each month or £99 for the year of strips and lancets if I don't get it from the doctor?

Hi,
Most of us Type 2's don't get given meters or strips, so we buy our own. Meters are relatively inexpensive and sometimes free, but it is the testing strips that cost money and if you are to test properly you need several strips a day. Browse round on-line, but I think you will find the SD Codefree strips are the cheapest.

The promotion codes for the packs of strips are 264086 for 5 packs and 975833 for 10 packs.
