Hello people I two days ago was diagnosed as type 1 diabetic and for Brekkie normally enjoy Three Weetabix with a sliced Banana topped with Honey... and thats my concern, what with Honey having no nutritional info as being a natural food I am not sure if I should steer clear of it...... Please if you know could you chuck your advice my way. MY HEADS IN SUCH A SPIN!! Too much to take in!!!

hya,
youre brekkie is all high in sugar, have a look at low carb threads on ere,i lowered my carb after joining here and my bloods soon went lower, there are many helpful people so ask as many questions as u need to,take care :D

Welcome to the forum,Smithy, confusing isn't it?! According to my Collins Gem carb counter book , honey has 5.8 carbs per tsp,so it is quite high in carbs unless you only take a teaspoonful.3 Weetabix has also a lot of carbs as well.I like Weetabix but only have one at breakfast .Banana is also high in carbs!!I medium banana is 20.1 carbs. So by my reckoning you are eating 25+20+10 + the milk so that is 55+ carbs for breakfast which is actually more carbs than I eat in a day!!!You may want to replan breakfast a bit!For instance if you only have two Weetabix and some other lower carb fruit this will bring down the carb total a lot.

Oops didn't notice that you were type 1 Smithy so ,although your carb intake at breakfast is high you could control this with your insulin dosage. However if you reduce your carb intake over the day you may find that your blood sugar levels will drop down and you may need less insulin to control it.

I would think that reading Dr. richard Bernstein's diabetes solution, would be the best place to start for a T1. Bernstein is a T1 too.

I would work out what the carb content of your breakfast is and try adjusting your dosage to suit... But then im not a low carber myself.

I think it's important to at least try a diet that you enjoy and try adjusting your insulin dose before tyring the low carb option... if you're not already a low carber.

This is my personal view, i don't like to let my diabetes control what i can and can't eat, with experimentation and trial and error, you can hopefully get to a point where you know how to compensate for whatever you want to eat. It doesn't work for everybody though...

Honey is about 80% sugar, the rest is water and some minerals. As long as you adjust the amount, it is no big deal
eg
This morning had porridge with some big jumbo oats and approx 1/2 tsp or less of local honey mixed in with sliced bananas...

Usually about a tsp of honey in porridge, or museli, oats and oat flakes with no extra honey

The mug of coffee might raise the BS, but all things in moderation I guess
