Hello and welcome to the forum.
I am 67 years old and controlling my type 2 with diet, no meds. The important thing in losing weight is to reduce the carbs. This will also help enormously with blood sugar levels. I have lost over 4 stones since starting the low carb diet, with increased fats, mostly dairy. My lipids and triglycerides have improved significantly. Have a look at this thread, which you may find useful
http://www.diabetes.co.uk/forum/threads/a-new-low-carb-guide-for-beginners.68695/ It is the carbs that cause weight gain, not the fats.
How is your diabetes control? What was your last HbA1c? Maybe that will improve too.
