Hi,
@fetlar14 -welcome to the forum!
Three weeks ago I was exactly where you are - just diagnosed, in shock, and terrified. Then I found this site, got myself a meter so that I could check my own blood sugar levels, and started the low carb diet that everyone talks about on here. Now my levels have dropped and been pretty stable over the past week.
Before my diagnosis I felt terrible and was very depressed, without knowing why. Now the depression has lifted, I've lost 10lbs and I feel great - I have so much more energy and I'm rediscovering my zest for life. All that in 3 weeks!
My GP wanted to start me on Metformin straight away, but I have resisted that so far. I suppose it depends on what one's levels are, but he grudgingly agreed to let me try to get control of this with diet and exercise alone, and we'll have a review in 3 months' time. Fingers crossed...
So, I'm sorry for delivering War & Peace, but I wanted you to know you have definitely come to the right place. I knew virtually nothing about diabetes 3 weeks ago, but I'm learning fast now. And if
I can do it, you certainly can - I'm 63 in a couple of weeks, overweight since I grew teeth, totally addicted to chocolate, and have a very sedentary lifestyle.
Read all you can - both on this site and wherever else you can find useful information, reach out and take the help and good advice that's freely offered on here, and enjoy regaining control over your health and your life!
