help please!!!

Hi all,

my friend has had a reocurring absess on her back.. shes been to the hospital today as its back and bigger than ever and is leaking pus. they said they want to test her for diabetes.. i asked her if any of her family have type two and both set of grandparents and her auntie has infact got type 2.. i know you guys aren't able to diagnose anything but theyve said they can fit her in til tomorrow to be tested at the diabetes centre.. can a doctor test her for type 2.. im type one myself so im not that educated on type 2 but i know a little.. if i tested her sugar would it tell me anything would it be high like mine would be if i didnt take insulin. shes only 20 and worried out her poor little mind.. i would be so grateful if anyone could give me/her a little advice please?
 
Tomorrow isn't too far away - if you want test her blood sugar levels if it is above around 6 mmol/ml then that may indicate a problem; the higher it is the more likely there is a problem. She needs to get it checked by the Diabetes Centre though to be sure.

i beg to differ without being rude. when your worried you may have a long life illness tomorrow may seem like its next year! i just want to ease her worrying, but the levels of glucose is very useful if she wants me to test her. the hospital didnt even mention the diabetes centre to her. shes been worried to death and pushed out theh ospital with no help :(
 
Hi, I assume your in the UK.

If you test her bloods on your meter then the normal level for none diabetics is between 4 - 8.
If under stress or after eating or drinking high glucose drink or food, then it can be a little higher, but the body will bring this back down to between 4 - 8 if you retest after 2 hours.

I would only be worried if the result was over 20, if the result is over 30. I would say use the test fluids on your meter, to check its working, then retest. if over 30 phone the NHS helpline or nearest hospital for advice.

If you test someone else with your equipment, make sure that it is properly cleaned before and after. Blood bourne viruses are spead so very easily and you don't want to add those to either of your list of health woes.

Really, tomorrow isn't so far away. You are not qualilfied to interpret the blood glucose reading of someone who is carrying an infection. An infection will affect the blood sugar readings even of a "normal" person without diabetes. From my personal knowledge (gestational diabetes and T2), they don't usually diagnose T2 diabetes from a single blood test anyway, the test tomorrow is likely to be the start of a process over several weeks rather than an answer...

If you are so worried about your friend's health and welfare that you think it can't wait until tomorrow the best thing you can do is call an ambulance, or NHS Direct if you are unsure how serious it is. Otherwise you need to get a grip and stop stressing! It isn't helping either of you. If the test has an abnormal reading you will need a clear head to look at what self help measures you can take to start bringing the blood sugar readings down by the time of the next test and to help her body heal - lots of sweet sugary things will feed whatever bug is causing the abscess even if she isn't diabetic.
