Hi

I wonder if anyone could help as I am feelig very confused.

I have been feeling dreadful for the past few months: went to the GP who did some blood tests including a fasting glucose one.

This was 7.3 - when I phoned for results the GP said I was probably diabetic and I would need a further test to confirm.

I went for a glucose intolerance test - results 6.8 before - then 6.1 after.

So - apparently this means I am not diabetic - but have 'impaired fasting glucose'?

No need for any further discussions but another test in a year.

I am still feeling dreadful and have bought a testing monitor. (having looked on this site and thought perhaps I should rethink what I eat and test to check the effects.)

This morning the figure is 7.9 on waking. I feel really woozy and struggled to wake up.

Any advice: I'm really confused about if I need to take any action - and if so, what?!

Also I take antidepressants: venlafaxine 75mg per day - and wondered if maybe this had an effect on blood glucose levels?
Or - if stress has an effect on blood glucose? I work in a school and went through Ofsted recently which is stressful to say the least. (that's why I thought I was feeling rough.)

Thanks

Tess

Hi,

yep, stress can affect pretty much everything in your body, it's different for everyone I guess. As for antidepressants, I can't say whether they affect blood glucose, as my control was useless anyway in all the years I was taking them. But I do know that venlafaxine made me feel like ****. Most antidepressants made me feel drugged and sleepy. Maybe a different type might work better for you.

Apparently the WHO criteria for diabetes is fasting glocose above 7mmol/l on 2 occasions. Not really sure about gtt as I've never had one. Have you tried reducing your carbs (sugar and starch) to see if you feel any better?

Hope you feel ok soon :-)

Hi Tess and welcome :)

Sorry to hear you are feeling so rough - and also that you have gone through the dreaded ofsted experience. We have teachers in our family so my sympathies to you! No wonder your BG levels are up as stress really does not help!

I suggest that you go to the Greetings and Introductions section and search out the advice given by Ken or Sue, the Forum Monitors, to new T2s as that advice is key to you feeling better and perhaps even help you to avoid full blown diabetes; anyone who can do so really should take advantage of that chance. Perhaps they may even be kind enough to post that advice on here for you :?:

Come back and ask any questions - nothing is regarded as a stupid or silly question because if you don't know then you don't know! There is always someone on here to help. :)

Hi,

leaving the question of diabetes aside, I am on Amitriptyline an antidepressant drug also used to combat neuropathic pain. This stuff makes me pretty dopey and I take the bulk of it at night. This deals with the worst of the pain which always occurs at night but also helps me sleep.
I adjusted the time I take the bedtime dose so that it is wearing off a bit by the time I get up and don't feel too dopey. I actually take this dose at 8pm (4 hours before bed) and this seems to work best for me.

Might be worth asking your Doc about this. If you are still feeling so low, you should be going back to the GP anyway.

Hope things get better for you soon

Be good and be lucky

Dave
