Hi :?
Please help, I have been diagnosed for just under a year with type 2. My Dr put me on metformin 500g 4 times a day, and has now added Glicazide 80mg 1 a day as well as Simvastatin 1 a day for my now raised Cholesterol level of 10. my blood levels have been between 15.0 to 21.0 on the rare occasion the go down to 10. But never under. I get sleepy, sweaty and tend to go and have a lie down. I have took on board everything the dietican has said, put in the measures.Apart from that help i am stuck!!! i also have bad mobility and cannot exercise much. Please can you put me in the right direction!!!

Hi Karen, sorry you are confused and struggling, just wondering what kind of diet you follow, tell what you are eating, give us an average days menu, incl snacks etc.

Love from me, another Karen x

Hi Karen,

Yeah, it can be very confusing when you have been recently diagnosed. Most of the contributors on the forum have been through it too, and most have emerged fitter, healthier and happier than before. I'm sure you can do it too.

Priority number 1 - get those blood sugar levels down as soon as you can. I know you realise they are very high but it really is the single most important thing to focus on at this stage. If you can get better control, many other aspects of your health will improve immediately.

As a matter of interest, what has your dietician told you, and what are you eating ?

All the best,

fergus

:) Hi thanks for getting back so quick. the Dietican told me to basically to eat what i want but in moderation. To cut out the salt and change to olive oil.
Average day starts with cereal weetabix semi skimmed milk, lunch normally a sandwich 2 slices of wholemeal bread with either chicken or ham, cucumber, tomatoe, piece of fruit. Tea cooked meal potaotoes, chicken and veg with a fruit salad (not every night maybe once a week). Always have a cooked meal at tea time. we normally have a mixture during the week, chicken wraps & salad, baked potatoes cheese & beans, roast beef and trimmings and the odd takeaway.~I have the odd pk of crisps maybe once a week. I dont really snack much, not since being diabetice. I am how ever on a lot of medication, could it be due to that?

Hi Karen, going by your menu there you are eating quite a lot of carbs.Bread ,potatoes, weetabix, wraps, crisps(I miss crisps!) all have high carbs.Try cutting to portions of these down by half for a week and see if that makes a difference to your sugar levels.

Thanks sugarless sue

will try that. By reading some of the other forums I have picked up some other tips which I m going to give a try...

cheers karen :)

I'd agree with Sue completely. Your dietician hasn't done you any favours by saying you should eat whatever you want. Not if you want to have normal blood sugars, that is.

Why not try replacing some of the starchy carbohydrates in your diet with foods which have a much smaller effect on blood sugar. Although we've been conditioned to believe that things like breakfast cereal and breads are OK to eat, they are both converted to sugar very quickly after they're eaten. As a t2, your insulin can't respond appropriately so your blood glucose rises instead.

Think about some other foods you enjoy which could replace some of the starches. I guarantee your meter will thank you. You will probably feel less hunger too, which is yet another advantage.

All the best,

fergus

hi fergus

Thanks for your support. I just happened to come across this site and its the first time joining anything like it. Have been reading through some of the stuff on here and its really usefull. Did not have things explained that well, When i was first diagnosed.
I feel a lot better knowing that i can just jump on-line, when i dont understand something, and know i will get an answer.

Will try the advice given and let you know how i get on

Cheers :)

Karen
