I've been dianosed with type 2 diabetes (approx 1 month ago). I'm still trying to get my sugar levels under control. For lunch today i've had 3 slices of wholemeal bread with tuna & mayo sandwich paste, a muller light yogurt and 1 satsuma. I've just taken my reading, 2 hours after eating (using a freestyle lite meter) and my level is 10.1, i'm a little concerned that the reading is quite high when i ate what i thought was a 'healthy' lunch. Any advice would be welcome. Thanks

Hi Shazzyb,

I am T2 too and just 3 months down the line and your lunch looks like something I had when I first got diagnosed.

3 slices of bread .......... each probably contain something like 20-35 carbs - the yogurt containst 13-15 carbs, the satsuma is high on the carb scale as well. So you having such a high reading suggest you are having way too many carbs in your meal and/or you have the problem I have with wheat/gluten. The tuna is ok and a little mayo too, but it very much depends on the overall size of the meal and that seems a little big to me, sorry!

You probably need to cut out the bread and in general re-think your diet to get you Bg numbers down.

Reducing your carb intake will hugely benefit your Bg numbers and your health in general.

No expert, but I know that a few around here are and expect them to post too with much more advice than I can give - my advice is just based on my experince. Going from 300+ carbs a day to 100 and then to my current level of 50-70 have helped me immensely - with Bg at 14 fasting (HBA1C 10.2) at diagnoses to 5.3 and HBA1C 5.7 (just a couple of days ago).

HAve a good read on the Low Carb forum and see what fits you and test extensively (if you can) for a week to see where your peaks are and what food creates those peaks, then adjust your diet accordingly.

Hope this helps a bit.

Hi Alice,

Many thanks. I'm grateful for any advice that you can give me. I'm still very new to this and am struggling. My hba1c was 8.8, which my GP says she wants lower than 7 when she tests me again in 3 months!!

I'm thinking that carbs are a problem area for me - one of the anyway

Thanks again

Hi Shaz,

You are very welcome and trust me, it WILL get easier!

As I said, my HBA1C was 10.2 3 months ago and when I was tested last week it was 5.7!!! What did I do?? Dropped all bread, pasta, rice and potatoes for starters! Never liked cereals much, but if you eat those, cut them out too. All added sugars, cakes etc ...... away with theee!! hehehe

I adopted a carb and calorie managed diet - started with 100 carbs/day but already after a couple of weeks I found the regime much easier and adjusted downwards to 50-70 carbs/day with 1800 cals as a max. This was something I could stick to fairly easily and have only recently managed to make adjustments and will do again now as I need to get some oily fish into my diet regularly.

I am T2 on diet only so this is what I found worked for me, we are so different in what we like of foods that you really need to get working on that diet. Coolins Gem Carb counter book from Amazon is about £3 but absolutely essential tool when you start out - I still take it with me when I go shopping!!

Trust me........ if I can do this, ANYONE can!! AND I still have chocolate every day but it is 85% pure cocao and I am loving it.

It will take a while before our Carb cravings will go away and you will fall by the wayside - God only knows I did plenty of times......... and still I have managed to achieve great Bg numbers in a relatively short time. It might be "hard" the first week or so, but if you are determined to stay of meds and have a long and healthy life despite the diabetes, it is so worth putting in the effort/time to get the diet sorted early on.

Keep asking questions ........... we are all happy to help wherever, whenever we can.

Alice
