I have an ileostomy (1981) & have always been very careful making sure I eat a very healthy diet, which includes mainly fish, chicken, and a small amount of red meat., love loads of fruit especially dark soft fruit, tangerines etc but too much has adverse affects, eat loads of yogurt both plain for over fruit desserts & sml tubs which I eat at lunchtime. I am fortunate that I do not have a very 'sweet tooth '
Last year I was diagnosed type 2 but because of my diet & healthy lifestyle I do no have any medication. I do not have blood tests to check sugar levels (in fact do not know how to do it)
Just received an email from Diabetes UK regarding diet which suggest suitable foods to ensure
anyone with similar symptoms with an ileostomy that can offer me some tips please. I am also trying to lose about 7lbs in weight whhich although not a lot would make me more comfortable!!

Hi Cercor

I didn't quite understand the above sentence. Did the email suggest any foods? Or did it suggest you find help from others who have had an ileostomy?

I hope someone may be able to help you here.

Benedict

hello Benedict, thanks for your reply,
the email was a general newsletter but as I have an ileostomy I am limited as to how much fruit & fibre I can eat, (never bothered me before I was diagnosed), all information re diabetes seems to be mainly for people who are on medication,
Apparently my glucose reading is 1 or 2 points above normal therefore I do not require medication & because I have never shown any symptoms (before or after diagnosis) I tend to forget that I have actually been diagnosed as a diabetic therefor any tips from anyone with an iloeostomy who is also on diet only treatment would be most welcome

Hi. I am Type2 and on the diet and exercise plan. I also have an ileostomy which I have had since 1998.This was preceded by ulcerative colitis the year before. I was recently diagnosed with diabetes so diet is very new to me for this condition. I have my first appointment with the dietitian next week. I know that my bag fills up quicker since I started eating fruit and more fibre. Am I getting sufficient nutrients because of this? So many questions... Ian
