What type of diabetes do you have? How to you manage it?

Broadly speaking the target is to have a hba1c of 48 or less. This thread is over 3 years old and is talking about hba1c using the DCCT measurement %

What is causing you confusion @chattycathy34 ? Is it what you hba1c number means? Or why your result is out of target?

The information that you have four jabs a day doesn't really give that much of a clue about how you manage your diabetes. What insulin are you on and do you carb count?

Do you test your blood sugar?

A hba1c of 115 equates to an average blood sugar of 17.5. If you aren't testing a lot, you are probably missing a lot of what's going on with your blood sugar, including the post meal spikes and likely running high overnight.

It can't be that confusing, your hba1c is high because your blood sugar is high. Maybe it's little higher than you were expecting, but that cant be that confusing if you know you aren't testing that much.

I'm not sure what you mean by "too late". Do you have any diabetic complications? If you do, improving your glycaemic control can help to alleviate symptoms. If you don't then hba1c provides an indication of risks of developing complications. Small improvements in you hba1c can greatly reduce your risks.

Did you helpful nurse give you any tips on improving glycaemic control? Have you been on a DAFNE course? Do you carb count? Have you done any basal testing?

You say you do four injections a day, but that's only half the picture of diabetic management, to figure out what dose to give and check the injections are doing their job you need to also test you blood sugar. It's no ones favourite thing to do, it's a pain in the bum and its wearing. But it is necessary to control diabetes. Maybe try to get back to by setting a goal to test a certain number of times, be proud of youself for testing. It's hard. It's an achievement. When you've got back into testing and got a better picture of what your blood sugars are doing you can have a think about what adjustments might be needed to improve your glycaemic control. Seek advice from your DSN.
