Help with sugar roller coaster

We have a phone number to the diabetes specialists so we can call and discuss things like this.do you not have a number to call near you.i get tingling and pins and needles at times but never cramps.
 
I'm sorry to hear that.its not very helpful is it.do you not get checked every six months by the consultant.we have a diabetes nurse in our surgery who also sends for you to get checked.there must be some one you can contact at the hospital with your concerns.
 
What i found was that as i worked on the timing and carb counting, i gradually became able to bring my post-meal blood sugars down, first below 10.0 as Scheiner recommends, and now usually below 7.8. But if my post-meal reading is really low, say in the 5s, that is too low, and it means I'm probably on the way to a hypo, so I eat a bit more. I did it bit by bit. Now most of the time I'm in range.

Have you had any other checks at the diabetic clinic? T2s can have thyroid problems, vitamin D shortages, and also B12. I think your GP could probably order tests for all those. B vitamins may help if you think you may have started developing nerve damage. And exercise because it has an anti-inflammatory effect.

Whoah! You are Type 1. You should be seen by a specialist at least once a year. You should have your eyes and your feet checked every year. The NHS has a set of standards for the care of diabetics, and you are not getting your rights. Go in and request a referral to a hospital diabetic clinic with an endocrinologist. They will check all these things for you. I'm shocked!

yeah nhs is good for some things and lacks in others like mental health problems they say they put all this money into making things better and still things slip through if my morning reading is always low does this mean i need to take less basal or more ?
 
Ryan, you really need to go and see a specialist diabetic nurse and get a consultant referral, please call your GP on Monday.
Sort your diabetes out and you may well find your mental health improves as a result.

How long have you had type1 for?
 

What do you think Ryan that you should do to prevent the low bg in the morning when you first wake up Increase the nightime insulin or reduce it? What would be the most sensible thing to do?
 
Probably one of two units less, but so far you only have one morning reading to us, and it's not actually low. A reading in the 4s is a pretty perfect start to the day.
 
First off you need a diabetic team at hospital that can help you. Not a GP.

Secondly, be totally honest witb consultant and DSN and ask for help with managing.

At my hospital there are DSN's that specialise more in helping people that are struggling. DSn's that help and sign off "easy" patients.....

Most hospitals will have the same sort of care systems in place.

Please remember that they can only guide patients from info that you give them.

We too are in the same position as your healthcare professionals.

To really help you we would need you to complete a daily log book with timings, doses, foods, bolus's, basals, coffections etc.....

We can offer assistance but if we had a photo of your log book it would help enormously.
 
It is likely that your basal( background insulin) may have run out. All this information must seem overwhelming for you. I do however agree with advice given. Deal with one part of day at a time. Use info given to check Basel rates. Adjust as necessary see if you can be referred to a DSN diabetes specialist nurse. Don't give up, it's frustrating for you however if you put the work in it will get easier. Good luck.
 
hello i have been trying to get my numbers down recently and have seen abit of difference but still haven't adjusted my basual due to worrying about going hypo in my sleep i am still having erratic numbers however even though my numbers are coming down now i still have huge highs then very low readings with no feeling such as 2.5 which is worrying also foot drop is still there as well as sezuires but not sure if a neuropathy could cause foot drop and sezuires ? but then again i have never been diagnosed with neuropathy and emg tests are normal so im so lost
 
I'm so sorry it's so worrying mine are up and down its doing my head in now I'm trying so hard I had a good reading this morning but by lunch time it was 16.5
 
Swings in levels are no good... You have to minimise these.
What are a days worth of readings working if for you ie

8am 10.7
10am 15.4
Noon 8.2
2am 4.1

Etc.

Why not give us an average day worth of readings so we can tell you what we would do in your shoes?
 
Test sections of day/ night several times should help re identifying Basel needs. Check BM at night 2 am 4am and 6am if high and appropriate insulin given at last meal. Increase in Basel probably needed. (Beware if alcohol used as will affect Bms generally increase followed by drop later in day as insulin unable to be absorbed will then work.) only frequent blood tests for a period will identify variations. Ensure carbs are counted correctly for meals. Is insulin ratio correct eg Generally for me it's 1-2 units for 10grams .
Juliet, noon is very high is this general pattern? I also have swings but now using pump find these are less and tend to follow hypo correction, or stressful day at work.occasionally have miscalculated carbs.
 
its rubbish the carb insulin ratio is a load of **** it dosent even work i have a meal of say 60g of carbs and i take 8 units of insulin now you think this would cover it ohh no 2 hours later huge high blood sugar of 20 before i ate it was 5.6 so go figure the carb to insulin thing just dosent seem to work for me so dont know what else i can do and is anyone having the same neuropathy motor problems ?
 
Why do you take 8 units? This ratio is very unusual. I take 1.5 units of insulin for 10g 's of carbs so would take 9 units for 60g's. After 2 hours my bs will still be high but after 4 hours it would be back down, unless I am exercising which brings it down quicker. You are being too prescriptive wth your timing for testing, what is your bs after 3 or 4 hours. Carb counting isn't ****, it's a very good way of working out how much insulin to take, without it taking insulin would just be random.
 
I thought you was supposed to test two hours after eating thus my sugars been high means that the ratio thing to Cana dosent work because it dosent even correlate with sugar readings if the ratio was right and it did work I wouldn't be getting random high readings like that and why would you test 4 hours after that means you would of had 4 hours of high blood sugar if your not testing two hours after eating this is very serious to your overall diabetic health is it not ?
